Abstract

Anxiety is a ubiquitous human experience and anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders noted in children and adolescents. Therefore, it is concerning that relatively little systematic clinical research has focused on anxiety and anxiety disorders.
The 1997 international research conference on anxiety disorders in children and adolescents has led to this publication of various aspects of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Sixteen chapters are included with an historical overview leading to a comprehensive review of the field and synthesis of the majority of available clinical research on of anxiety disorders. Succinct presentation of the data is a positive feature of this publication. The only disadvantages, if any, are the brevity of the discussion about some comorbidity issues raised by the data presented, and the occasional lack of focus on particular issues relevant for adolescents with anxiety disorders.
Nevertheless, this publication will be of considerable interest to child and adolescent psychiatrists and paediatricians in clinical practice and clinical researchers in the field of anxiety disorders and comorbid psychiatric disorders. It is a fine and scholarly text.
