Abstract

Changes to MOPS for 2003
There have been three major changes to MOPS activities for 2003: reintroduction of practice related activities, changes to peer review group requirements, and simplification of the structured improvement process.
Those of you enrolled in the Program have been sent new sections for insertion to your Manual. If you haven't received these papers or if you have mislaid them, you can download them from the College website (members only domain) as and when you need them: http://www.ranzcp.org/mops1.htm. Alternatively contact the MOPS Office for a set.
If you have not got an ID and password for the members only domain of the website - go to http://www.ranzcp.org and click on ‘services’ on the left hand side to see the registration form for the members only domain. Complete this form on line to get your ID and password which will be provided usually within 24 hours (during working days).
Please note - changes to MOPS are from January 2003 only - I have received points claims for practice related activities that are not valid for 2002.
Practice Related Activities are not described in the current Program Outline as they are being re-introduced from the 1996–2000 version of the Program. They are ‘educational activities, such as journal reading, undertaken by psychiatrists in day-to-day practice and which contribute to their maintenance of professional standards. They may include reading of professional literature, the use of educational audio and videotapes, involvement in computer assisted learning programs and completion of self-assessment packages. These activities attract 0.5 points per hour with a maximum of 20 points per year.’
Reading, listening to tapes or using the Internet in this category is more likely to be unstructured and free ranging rather than focussed on seeking an answer to a particular question or concern. Where reading of journals or listening to tapes is undertaken in a structured way with a particular focus it should be recorded as a structured improvement project (SIP). The new process for recording SIPs is more simple than previously and the project no longer needs to be submitted to the MOPS Office.
If you have any questions in relation to the new information please don't hesitate to contact the MOPS Office for assistance.
MOPS Survey and Review
A report on the results of the survey was presented to the AGM in Hobart in May and I would be happy to provide a copy of this report to those of you who were not present. The process of interpreting the data and making decisions about changes to the MOPS Program is being undertaken by the MOPS Development Committee and it is planned that suggested changes will be presented to Council in October. As this report is prepared 3 months ahead of its publication I am unable to use it to keep you aware of proposed changes, however, the reports in the Branch Newsletters will present information for you as we go through the process.
