Abstract

It may seem fanciful to suggest that the RANZCP becomes carbon neutral. However there are several reasons why this needs to happen. Firstly global warming is happening and we all need to think globally and act locally to prevent it getting worse. Other health care organisations such as the British Medical Association are already proceeding down this path. Secondly doctors have a long history of being advocates for public health and this is the biggest threat to our health yet. Lastly the values encompassed in becoming carbon neutral are central to our role as psychiatrists and if we get this right we are likely to enhance our public role. This presentation outlines why the college should become carbon neutral, how this should happen and the likely benefits that would accrue to the College.
