Abstract
The effects of Vagus Nerve preservation or division during One Anastomosis/Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB/MGB) have not been studied before. The aim of this study was to compare Vagus Dividing OAGB/MGB versus Vagus Preserving OAGB/MGB as regards Gastrointestinal Quality-of-Life, postoperative weight loss, and metabolic outcome.
This randomized-controlled study included 200 patients divided into two equal groups. Group I underwent Vagus Dividing OAGB/MGB (VD-OAGB/MGB). Group II underwent Vagus Preserving OAGB/MGB (VP-OAGB/MGB) in whom the neurovascular bundle was preserved till the gastric antrum. One year after surgery 87 patients in Group I and 84 patients in Group II completed the follow-up. The postoperative Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index score significantly improved 1 year after surgery. Patients had improvement in social, physical, and emotional function. The domain of specific symptoms worsened after VD-OAGB/MGB and improved after VP-OAGB/MGB. There was no significant difference between both groups in complications, weight loss, or metabolic outcome.
