Abstract

InnovAiT is produced on a 3 year cycle. However, many articles do not significantly go out of date in that time. This section of InnovAiT summarizes articles from the previous cycle of InnovAiT that GPs and GPs in training might still find useful today.
Adult mental health assessment
Professor Tony Kendrick and Dr Chantal Simon
InnovAiT 2008 1(3): p. 180–6
In the UK, one in six adults has a neurotic disorder (such as anxiety and depression), while one in seven has considered suicide at some point in their lives. One in 200 has a psychotic disorder such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. More people are currently not working because of mental health problems than any other issue. The role of the GP in the care of people with mental health problems is crucial as 90% are cared for entirely in primary care. About 30% of GP consultations have a mental health component and GPs have a role in detection, treatment, referral and ongoing community support of people with mental health disorders. This article provides a strategy for GPs to use when assessing adult mental health problems in primary care.
Assessing adults who are coughing in primary care
Dr Hazel Everitt
InnovAiT 2008 1(3): p. 216–21
Respiratory problems, including infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, are a very common reason for patients to attend their GPs. Eight million people suffer from respiratory disease in the UK, with one-third of the population visiting their general practice at least once a year with a respiratory condition. Cough is the most common reason for patients to visit their GP. This article aims to give GPs in training a strategy with which to approach patients presenting with cough to primary care.
Lung cancer
Dr Chantal Simon, Dr Max Watson, Dr Anne Drake, Dr Audrey Fenton and Dr Caroline McLoughlin
InnovAiT 2008 1(3): p. 233–9
Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Each year, 37 000 patients are diagnosed with lung cancer and overall it is the third most common cause of death in the UK. The incidence of lung cancer increases with age and 85% of those diagnosed with lung cancer are over the age of 65 years. This article summarizes the prevention, presentation and management of this important disease.
Crammer's Corner: the 10 RCGP Curriculum domains
Dr Ben Riley
InnovAiT 2008 1(3): p. 241–5
This article illustrates what the 10 Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Curriculum domains of competence are and how they can be used to provide a structure for learning about any topic relevant to general practice. It uses mental health problems as an example and shows how each curriculum domain is relevant to that topic.
