Question: How many entries do I need in the learning log in my ePortfolio?
Answer: The learning log is an educational tool used to chart clinical and personal development and provide and validate evidence of competencies through trainee analysis and reflection. There is no exact number of entries required. Entries should be added on a regular basis, be broadly distributed across the curriculum headings, of a good quality and provide evidence of critical reflection on learning opportunities and points for development. The learning log can provide your educational supervisor with a valuable insight into your clinical practice and self-awareness, particularly during your ST1 and ST2 hospital placements, when he or she has less contact with you. During the ST3 year, it can also provide material for tutorials, be used to plan your personal development plan and highlight areas of weakness or reduced clinical exposure, which need to be addressed. It is also used as a means of assessment providing evidence of professional development to the Deanery and as such should be viewed as just as important as completing formal assessments. Therefore, try not to view the learning log as a burden rather as an opportunity to provide evidence of progression and ultimately competency to complete your GP training.
