Abstract

Introduction
The President of each National Cardiac Society was asked by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) to officially nominate a National Coordinator for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention to facilitate the adoption and adaptation of both the Fourth Joint European Societies Task Force Guidelines on CVD Prevention in Clinical Practice [1] and the European Heart Health Charter [2], as well as driving the ‘call for action’ in each country. Fifty-two National Coordinators for CVD prevention have been appointed in 2007 in 43 out of 51 ESC member countries.
Role
The National Coordinators are the primary contact for any prevention-related initiative at national level and they do have an essential role to play in their respective countries:
To facilitate and oversee the endorsement, adaptation, translation, and publication of the European Guidelines on CVD Prevention [1] at national level.
To build national multidisciplinary professional alliances and a close collaboration with relevant national societies and organizations active in the field of CVD prevention (society of general practice, heart foundation, society of hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, internal medicine, stroke, behavioral medicine …).
To establish contact with local health authorities to promote the implementation of the European Heart Health Charter [2] initiative in-country.
To coordinate the development of CVD prevention tools at national level (e.g. to contribute to the development, adaptation, and promotion of country-specific or translated version of HeartScore® [3] and the Health Professional Toolkit).
To act as a direct and privileged contact for the Prevention Department of the ESC and of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation.
