Abstract

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of Tulane University Health Sciences Center and the Southern Regional Meeting. Tulane University Health Sciences Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Tulane University Health Sciences Center and the Southern Regional Meeting present this activity for educational purposes only and do not endorse any product, content of presentation or exhibit. Participants are expected to utilize their own expertise and judgment while engaged in the practice of medicine. The content of the presentations is provided solely by presenters who have been selected because of their recognized expertise.
The Southern Regional Meeting provides the platform and forum for collaborative interdisciplinary research and clinical applications. Physicians and healthcare professionals will examine the most recent research findings in the medicine to determine and inform future research projects based on the analysis of the emerging research as well as to determine applications for clinical practice. The process of submission, presenting, defending and being open to collaborative interaction among peers is a very important part of training in academic medicine.
Physicians and clinical researchers need to increase their competency in developing strategies in providing patient care improvements. Investigators require a supportive forum for presenting their research. Senior investigators need to increase their competence in identifying mentees and increase their performance in mentoring junior investigators through the process of designing research that is relevant to understanding disease mechanisms and improved patient care.
The purpose of the Southern Regional Meetings are to foster research among senior and young investigators and provide a forum in which this research can be successfully submitted, discussed, debated and improved with respectful interactions with both peers and mentors. The Southern Regional Meetings bring together researchers, clinicians and students to review the current research and its impact on the future of medical care.
After participating in this educational activity, the participant should be better able to:
Critically evaluate the emerging cardiovascular disease research.
Discuss new developments in pathophysiology of human disease with colleagues.
Identify the trends in the developing guidelines and evidence-based state of the art in the specialties which may affect practice management and patient treatment decisions.
Identify new areas of investigation which will inform research and improve patient care.
Discuss the future development possible from current research trends.
Assess research trends as they relate to the mentoring process and collaboration with colleagues and junior investigators.
Predicted Changes in Practice as a result of this activity may include:
Determine which strategies are appropriate for incorporation into clinical practice.
Conduct a research assessment to determine if any of the strategies and trends could be extended and/or improved by further research and/or collaborative projects.
Engage in the mentoring process for young investigators.
Identify a possible collaborator (mentor or mentee) for research advancement.
It is the policy of the Center for Continuing Education at Tulane University Health Sciences Center to plan and implement all of its educational activities in accordance with the ACCME's Essential Areas and Policies to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor. In accordance with the ACCME's Standards for Commercial Support, everyone who is in a position to control the content of an educational activity certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM is required to disclose all financial relationships with any commercial interests within the past 12 months that creates a real or apparent conflict of interest. Individuals who do not disclose are disqualified from participating in a CME activity. Individuals with potential for influence or control of CME content include planners and planning committee members, authors, teachers, educational activity directors, educational partners, and others who participate, e.g. facilitators and moderators. This disclosure pertains to relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biomedical device manufacturers or biotech firms. Any real or apparent conflicts of interest must be resolved prior to the educational activity. Disclosure of off-label, experimental or investigational use of drugs or devices must also be made known to the audience.

This workshop will address multiple aspects of publication in scientific journals. Presenter will discuss preparation of materials, including the initial decision that the data are sufficient to justify publication. Issues related to manuscript writing will include length, focus, adherence to journal formats, and referencing. The editorial process from submission to publication will be described in-depth with particular attention to ways in which authors can interact with journal editors. Another section will cover ethical issues in publication including review boards, authorship, duplicate publication, intellectual property rights, and conflict of interest. There will be open discussion of sample cases and questions derived from the experiences of the participants. Participants are welcome to join the session late if their travel arrangements do not accommodate the 12:00 PM start.

Mobile devices, such as tablets, offer unique ways to recreate chalk talks on rounds and enhance excellent teaching, not substitute for it. This workshop will demonstrate strategies on utilizing mobile devices to enhance teaching on rounds and large group settings to increase learner engagement and excitement. You will also learn the concepts, tools, and tricks to increase personal productivity in your academic, administrative, and personal life.
This activity will target students, trainees and faculty. Effective communication is essential in professional growth and academic career is dependent on quality of presentations of your findings. This workshop will discuss approaches in preparation and profi ciency of presentations. The session will also focus on fundamental aspects of writing abstracts and manuscripts. Aspects related to developing common presentation skills will be also discussed during the workshop.

Physicians have a higher rate of burnout, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide than many other professionals. This workshop will help participants identify factors leading to burnout and present prevention techniques. The audience will participate in stress management techniques and develop plans for the management of acute and chronic stress. Substance abuse disorders and programs to assist those who may have concerns about their own substance abuse or that of a colleague will also be discussed.

This workshop will address the question: “How does one manage time to achieve one's life goals?” Attendees will analyze their current schedules and explore tools that may help them manage time for maximum personal and professional utility. Attendees will also explore their current challenges with procrastination and develop a personal plan to address them. The workshop will explore the concept of multitasking and compare the speed and utility of paper versus electronic device in capturing ideas throughout the day.
