Abstract

The ESRC funded much of the original empirical work reported in this book, (the chapters by Esther Dermott, Jane Parry and Lynne Pettinger develop their PhD research, Clare Ungerson's chapter derives from research undertaken under the auspices of the ESRC Future of Work Programme, and Miriam's Glucksmann's from her ESRC Professorial Fellowship). We wish to acknowledge this assistance. We are also grateful for their support in funding the seminar in September 2003 where the papers in this volume were first presented.
