Abstract

During my recent trip to China to attend the 8th Chinese Stroke Conference in Chang Sha, Hunan Province, I was fortunate to be able to launch the first Chinese edition of the International Journal of Stroke in Beijing.
The Chinese edition is our first foreign language publication. This is extremely appropriate given the enormity of the Chinese populous and its significant burden of stroke. At this stage the plan is to translate selected articles directly and cover all editions for 2008 and 2009. In doing this we have been extremely fortunate in having the industry collaboration with Ebewe.
With Wiley–Blackwell Publishing we have assembled an outstanding editorial board with representatives from a number of different geographical locations throughout China. These board members and the Editors-in-Chief Professor Wang and Professor Zeng, have selected the most appropriate articles, which they think would be of general interest to physicians managing stroke in China.
At the launch in Beijing a large number of representatives from the press were present and were extremely interested in not only the journal itself but also the broad aspects of stroke and its management.
The mission of the World Stroke Organisation is to promote research and education in stroke globally; this Chinese language edition launch is an important example of how this mission is being fulfilled through its flagship publication, the International Journal of Stroke, in one of the most important emerging economies today.
The whole event was an exciting and instructive one for all those present, mostly for me!
Marie-Germaine Bousser awarded the Johann Jakob Wepfer Prize 2008
The Johann Jakob Wepfer Prize worth 20 000 euros, has been awarded by the ESC Committee to Professor Marie-Germaine Bousser, for her work in the field of stroke research, primarily genetic and molecular bases in early forms encountered in young people. The International Journal of Stroke offers congratulations to Professor Bousser for her achievement.
New appointment for Alastair Buchan
Congratulations to Professor Alastair Buchan neurologist and stroke specialist, who will head the medical sciences division at the University of Oxford from October 2008. Professor Buchan, Professor of Clinical Geratology at the university, is both a clinician who treats stroke patients and a neuroscience researcher whose laboratory interests have the long-term goal of discovering stroke interventions that will both protect the brain and stimulate recovery. He works currently with Professor Peter Rothwell and Professor Peter Jezzard leading the Oxford Acute Stroke Programme, which will bring together different strands of stroke research from across the University to develop a research-driven care programme for stroke patients within Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital. An important aspect of the Oxford Stroke Programme is a medical imaging centre to be built next to the emergency department at the John Radcliffe, which will allow faster treatment of stroke patients, thus preserving brain function.
