Analizamos la relación entre estatus socioeconómico y rendimiento escolar, partiendo de la premisa de que los alumnos procedentes de contextos familiares desfavorecidos tienden a obtener resultados escolares inferiores a los que logran quienes proceden de familias con un nivel socioeconómico alto. Además de comprobar esta relación, hemos examinado cómo incide sobre ella la acción educativa de la escuela. El estudio se ha desarrollado en Andalucía, utilizando resultados de las pruebas de diagnóstico aplicadas a principios del curso escolar 2006/2007 a un total de 8.048 alumnos de quinto de Educación Primaria y tercero de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria. También se ha tenido en cuenta la información aportada por las familias sobre diversos indicadores del estatus socioeconómico. Los resultados obtenidos confirman la relación entre rendimiento y estatus socioeconómico, al tiempo que revelan una reducción de la intensidad de ésta para el alumnado que se encuentra en niveles más avanzados dentro del sistema educativo. Se concluye afirmando la necesidad de intervenir desde la escuela y desde la familia para compensar los efectos del contexto socioeconómico.
