Carl Fischer has released a new book, Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians, written to help the young conductor move beyond beat patterns and counting to focus on the expressive aspects of performance. This textbook can be utilized in the college classroom and as a basic resource for young conductors at any teaching level. Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians covers the full range of meters from simple patterns to compound and irregular meters. The musical examples draw from all periods of music history and include both choral and instrumental repertoire. More information can be obtained at www.carlfischer.com.
Harmony Book, by Elliott Carter, has been released by Carl Fischer. A guide to the harmonic resources employed by Carter during 1960–1980, it explores the relationships possible within the twelve-tone chromatic scale. Includes essays on Carter's methodology, interviews with Carter, and provides young composers a starting place for expanding their own harmonic practice.
