The terms pointing, clicking, mouse, menus, files, and so forth have new meanings in the computer environment. The terms needed to operate word processing software will transfer to other uses of the computer; they make up a basic vocabulary that will be used for many computer applications.

A CD-ROM is a small laser disc that looks like an ordinary audio compact disc, but which contains computer data equal to hundreds of high density floppy disks. CDROM requires a special device for reading this information: however, newer models of computers on most platforms are being manufactured with CD-ROM drives built in. These are often referred to as multimedia computers.
