Mehran Risk Score Is Still Valuable for Prediction of Contrast Nephropathy in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome

We read the article entitled “Systemic immune inflammation index: a novel predictor of contrast-induced nephropathy in patients with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction” by Kelesoglu et al with interest. ¹

The authors ¹ showed that the systemic immune inflammation (SII) index, a surrogate inflammatory marker, is a predictor of contrast nephropathy in patients with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The SII index showed significant impact, especially in malignancy prognosis. ² Recently, Erdogan et al showed that the SII is an independent predictor of functionally significant coronary stenosis detected by fractional flow reserve in chronic coronary syndrome patients. ³

The Mehran risk score is useful for the prediction of contrast-induced nephropathy. ⁴ Did the authors ¹ calculate the Mehran risk score before intervention in patients with NSTEMI? If calculation is possible, is there any correlation after regression analysis between the SII and Mehran risk scores?
