Abstract
Social studies is the area in the education for the educable mentally retarded which offers the most direct approach to the problems of living as an independent adult. Because of the special needs of these children, along with the prevalence of cultural disadvantage among them, modifications of programs and materials designed for the mentally normal are rarely effective. Criteria are offered for evaluating the effectiveness of the teacher designed program of social studies, along with suggestions for possible improvement.
