Abstract
New models in vocational habilitation for educable mentally retarded youth are always in demand. This plan, explained by Gene Betterman, was unique to Idaho and has potential for success in other communities or states faced with establishing work-study programs. Special emphasis is placed on community-public school cooperation in attempting to provide a service for 16 to 21 year old boys.
Marsha Smith explains that laterality and directionality may have a direct effect on a child's ability to produce letters and other images in their correct perspective. In such cases, remediation must begin at 'body awareness’ level and not on the paper on which he has been making the reversals. Exercises are offered by Mrs. Smith for use in training body awareness and discovering the differences between correct and reversed images through structured, creative play activities.
