Abstract

Jack Sasson is seasoned writer of commentaries, have produced in the same series the commentary on Jonah (1995) and the first volume on Judges 1-12 (2014). A little over a decade later, the treatment of Judges is brought to completion with this long-awaited second volume. The introductory issues were laid out in the earlier volume. Here Sasson provides an updated bibliography (pp. 597-649) and his own translation of Judges 13-21 (pp. 653-664) by way of introductory matter.
The format of the commentary section follows the format of the earlier volume. First the translation of the relevant section is offered. Then follow the detailed notes. In relation to Judges 13 there are a set of introductory remarks before turning to the verse-by-verse notes. Lastly, the comments section offers a more reflective exegesis of the narrative as a whole.
This commentary exemplified the several admirable qualities of the Anchor Yale Bible series as well as showcasing Sasson incisive analysis as a commentator. This is certain a commentary that specialist and those interested in a detailed reading of Judges will consult with great profit. This is a fine capstone to the scholarly work as a commentator undertake by Jack Sasson.
