This study showed that the presence of calculus and partially calcified dental plaque was associated with a reduction of dental caries of the buccal and lingual surfaces of the mandibular and maxillary first permanent molars in young Guatemalan school-children. Calcified plaques in these areas probably arose from high calcium-containing food deposits.
