Agricultural investment and economic development—some relationships

Disparity between developed and developing countries, in the relationship between agricultural productivity and inputs of capital and labour, suggests that substantially higher rates of investment in agriculture in poor countries are unlikely to yield dramatic results. A wider commitment to rural development is needed, with real incentives for farmers and improvements in education, health and nutrition. Aid should be diverted from grandiose projects to simpler schemes based on the village or commune.
