The Easter Sequence: A New Translation
Christians, to the Paschal Victim
Offer thankful praises now.
Lo! a Lamb the sheep redeemeth.
Christ alone of sinless life
Reconcileth sinners to the Father’s love,
Reconcileth mankind to God.
Death and life at last have contended
In the combat which he waged;
And as Prince of Life sent from heaven
Through his death he reigns evermore.
Tell us, Mary what thou sawest as thou went,
What thou sawest early that morn.
‘There the tomb of Christ who is living,
There the napkin and the shroud,
There the glory of Resurrection,
And the angels crying aloud,
“Christ your hope now lives, to Galilee is gone,
Follow after Christ the King.”’
Christ indeed from death is risen,
And has bought us freedom and peace,
Bringing us new life and new gladness,
He our Paschal Lamb and King.
Hail, thou risen Son of Mary, Lord of Life,
Hail, thou Son of God, victor King!

For Paul Tillich who died 23 October
You are the eagle who has dared to view
Eternal things.
And those who were afraid are not afraid
Beneath your wings.
