Abstract

2017 National Standards for DSMES Released
Updated every 5 years by AADE and the American Diabetes Association, the National Standards provide guidelines for operating a DSMES program. It is required that all accredited or recognized programs by AADE or ADA meet these guidelines in order to bill Medicare.
The changes made during this revision expound on the continuing body of evidence of what best helps people with diabetes manage their condition. Major updates include changes in language, an increased focus on quality, and recognition of new models of care (in particular, incorporation of technology-enabled self-management solutions). Read the new standards in this issue of TDE.
New Position Statement on Formulary and Medical Device Decisions
AADE has released a new position statement that differentiates between the types of formularies, discusses the implications of them and the potential barriers caused by formulary changes for people with diabetes, and outlines the overarching goal for establishing a role for diabetes educators within diabetes formulary and medical device selection and implementation processes.
