This research addresses delineations of gender roles, agency, and change in a modern
urban women’s residence in north India. It explores the social relations
of residents in a women’s hostel where the shaping of special community
creates empowermenf through self-reflection, interaction, and negotiation, yet where
also reside tensions, paradoxes, and constraints, in the merging and interplay of
traditional values and those of modernity.
