Abstract
This study investigates the impact of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh, focusing on areas such as resource accessibility, decision-making, user experiences, academic research and information management. By conducting interviews with 21 library professionals and employing thematic analysis, the study reveals critical insights. Big data significantly enhances resource accessibility by enabling customized collections and supports user-centric decision-making in library operations. It also improves user experiences through personalized recommendations and seamless navigation. Moreover, big data's analysis of citation patterns and collaborative networks bolsters academic research while addressing information overload and optimizing information retrieval processes. This research provides a thorough examination of big data's practical implications in university libraries, offering valuable insights for professionals, researchers and policymakers. It emphasizes the necessity of a proactive approach to leveraging big data's transformative potential in knowledge management, thereby shaping the future of academic libraries.

Introduction
University libraries in Bangladesh are embracing the revolutionary power of big data to redefine the landscape of knowledge management in the digital age, when information is abundant and growing quickly. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution progresses, higher education institutions recognize the need to adapt and leverage the potential of sophisticated technologies to improve academic resources and services (Singaram et al., 2023). Historically viewed as book and journal archives, university libraries have transformed into dynamic information hubs, responding to the different demands of students, teachers and researchers (Rahman et al., 2023). The introduction of big data ushers in a paradigm shift, providing an unparalleled potential to maximize the administration and accessibility of resources within these libraries.
In the context of higher education, university libraries in Bangladesh play a crucial role in supporting academic and research activities. These libraries serve as essential hubs for information dissemination, resource access and knowledge creation. However, they face several challenges, including limited budgets, outdated infrastructure and a lack of digital resources (Rahman, 2020). Many university libraries are in the process of transitioning from traditional to digital libraries, attempting to integrate modern information and communications technologies to meet the evolving needs of their users (Hoq and Haque, 2017). Despite these efforts, disparities in resource availability and access persist between different institutions (Islam and Roknuzzaman, 2021). The adoption of big data technologies presents a significant opportunity for these libraries to overcome existing challenges, enhance their services and better support their academic communities.
Big data, defined as the processing and analysis of large data sets, has emerged as a driving factor in a variety of industries (Abdalla, 2022). Its importance in academia stems from its ability to find patterns, trends and insights that can inform strategic decision-making. For university libraries in Bangladesh, this translates into a more agile and responsive strategy to fulfilling the informational needs of their academic communities. ‘Big data’ refers to the development and application of technologies designed to deliver precise information to users exactly when they need it, drawn from the vast and continuously expanding volumes of data in our society. The challenge lies not only in managing the sheer scale of the data, but also in handling increasingly diverse formats and the complexity of interconnected data sets (Riahi and Riahi, 2018). This definition captures the essence of big data, emphasizing its dynamic and multifaceted nature, which requires innovative approaches to extract meaningful insights and value from an overwhelming amount of information.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the complex influence of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh. The incorporation of big data analytics is transforming how these institutions work, from improving resource accessibility to enabling data-driven decision-making. We hope to provide a thorough overview of big data's revolutionary influence in the context of academic libraries by investigating specific areas such as predictive analytics for collection creation, user experience improvement and its role in managing information overload.
In the continuously changing world of knowledge management, university libraries in Bangladesh must embrace technological innovations in order to remain relevant and effective. Big data, defined as the huge input and analysis of varied information, has emerged as a transformational force with the potential to alter how knowledge is organized, accessed and distributed within academic institutions (Hussain and Shahid, 2022). The Oxford English Dictionary (2024) and Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2024), ‘big data’ refers to extremely large and complex datasets that challenge conventional data processing tools, requiring specialized technologies to capture, store, and analyze them effectively. This complexity arises from the sheer volume, variety, and velocity of data being generated, necessitating innovative methods for processing and managing such data in settings like academic institutions. Big data has the potential to improve resource accessibility in university libraries by allowing for a more personalized and dynamic approach to collection-building (Kamupunga and Chunting, 2019). The potential for data-driven decision-making processes brings opportunities for strategic resource allocation, library service optimization and improved user experiences (Sukula et al., 2023). Furthermore, big data has the potential to contribute considerably to academic research by encouraging a collaborative and innovative research environment within university libraries (Azam and Ahmad, 2023).
Despite the promises, integrating big data into university libraries is fraught with difficulties. Concerns about data governance, ethical considerations and the requirement for a strong technological infrastructure are all potential roadblocks to the smooth implementation of big data efforts (Ahmad et al., 2019). The varying levels of readiness and expertise among different libraries in implementing big data technology further complicate the situation (Salman et al., 2023). The compelling need to traverse this disruptive landscape properly underscores the necessity of investigating the influence of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh. Without a rigorous investigation, libraries risk missing out on the potential benefits of big data or, on the other hand, pursuing strategies that may not be aligned with the unique demands and challenges of the Bangladeshi academic sector. Understanding the subtle impact of big data is critical for libraries, which are tasked with offering not only accessible but also relevant and tailored knowledge resources.
Literature review
The literature review was conducted by analysing peer-reviewed articles, conference papers and relevant studies to gain comprehensive insights into how big data is reshaping library operations and services in academic institutions.
Knowledge and awareness of big data in libraries in Bangladesh
The advent of big data has introduced significant opportunities and challenges across various sectors, including academic libraries. In Bangladesh, the exploration of big data within the context of university libraries is still in its early stages, with limited research focused on the awareness, knowledge and preparedness of these institutions to leverage big data effectively.
Islam et al. (2022) examine the awareness and initial adoption of big data in selected information institutions in Bangladesh, highlighting the extent of big data adoption, the challenges encountered and the perceived benefits. Their study provides a broad overview, covering various types of information institutions, including public libraries, academic libraries and research institutions. They identify significant barriers, such as inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of skilled personnel and concerns around data privacy, which have impeded the broader adoption of big data technologies.
While Islam and Roknuzzaman (2021) offer insights into the general landscape of big data in information institutions across Bangladesh, the current study narrows the focus specifically to university libraries. Rather than assessing the ‘impact’ of big data – which implies a level of implementation and effect that has not yet been fully realized – this study investigates the knowledge and awareness of big data among library professionals in these academic settings. The key themes explored include the potential for data-driven decision-making, the anticipated benefits of predictive analytics, and the awareness of challenges such as information overload and the ethical use of data.
Unlike the broader approach taken by Islam et al. (2024), this study emphasizes the specific context of university libraries, exploring how professionals within these institutions perceive the role of big data in enhancing resource accessibility and user satisfaction. It also seeks to understand the level of preparedness and the existing challenges that these libraries face in moving towards a more data-driven approach. This focus on knowledge and awareness rather than concrete impacts reflects the current stage of big data adoption in Bangladeshi university libraries, where implementation is still largely at the conceptual or exploratory level.
Big data in libraries in other regions
In addition to the studies focused on Bangladesh, there is a wealth of research from other regions that highlights the diverse applications and benefits of big data in academic libraries. For instance, Ponera and Kyumana (2024) investigate the usage of big data analytic tools in academic libraries in Tanzania. Their study found that these tools significantly improved the management of library resources and enhanced user experience by providing personalized services based on user data. This study underscores the global relevance of big data in transforming library services and aligns with findings from Bangladesh, demonstrating similar benefits in different contexts.
In Europe, a study by Ball (2019) explores the impact of big data on library operations in several universities. He reported that big data analytics enabled libraries to make more informed decisions about resource allocation and collection development, much like the findings in Bangladesh. His research also highlights the challenges of data privacy and the need for robust data governance frameworks, which are critical considerations in any context.
Li et al. (2017) tested a framework for the application of big data in academic libraries in China. The data for this study was collected during the Big Data and Library Development Summit held in Guangzhou, China, in October 2016. The summit focused on leveraging big data to promote library development. Similarly, Zhan and Widen (2018) conducted a case study in Finland, exploring the role of public libraries in the context of big data. Using a mixed-methods approach, they collected data in two phases, including a survey of public libraries that provided an overview of professional roles connecting public libraries with big data. Additionally, Al-Barashdi and Al-Karousi (2018) explore the techniques and tools applicable in Omani academic libraries for analysing big data and determining its benefits.
Collectively, these studies from various regions illustrate the widespread potential of big data in academic libraries, highlighting both the opportunities and the challenges it presents. They offer valuable lessons that can inform the adoption and implementation of big data technologies in other contexts, including Bangladesh.
Big data and resource accessibility
The availability of materials within university libraries is an essential component of efficient knowledge dissemination. Recent research by Hussain and Shahid (2022) highlights the critical significance of big data analytics in improving resource accessibility. The utilization of big data approaches allows libraries to delve into user behaviour and preferences, providing a more in-depth understanding of their informational needs. Big data allows libraries to strategically modify their collections by analysing user interactions. This personalization guarantees that relevant materials aligned with user interests and needs are easily accessible, enabling a more efficient and user-centric learning environment. The personalized approach enabled by big data not only streamlines the resource-finding process, but also adds to increased user happiness and engagement (Shahid and Sheikh, 2021). The findings of Hussain and Shahid (2022) illustrate the revolutionary power of big data in rethinking old paradigms of library resource management. Libraries can proactively change their holdings to meet the changing demands of their academic communities by exploiting insights obtained from user data. The incorporation of big data analytics into resource accessibility methods marks a significant step forward in the creation of dynamic and responsive knowledge environments within university libraries.
Data-driven decision-making in library administration
The incorporation of big data into library management ushers in a decision-making paradigm based on data. According to Ahmad et al. (2019), big data has an impact on strategic decisions in resource allocation, collection development and facility enhancements. A data-driven strategy guarantees that librarians make informed decisions, maximizing resource use and boosting overall operational efficiency. Big data solutions seek to analyse data completely, derive value from it and make educated decisions. Big data goes beyond simply storing and accessing data, emphasizing the significance of obtaining useful insights (Oladokun et al., 2023). Big data has recently grabbed the interest of both academics and practitioners due to its potential to deliver useful insights for enhanced decision-making. Big data analytics is quickly becoming a prominent strategy used by many businesses to generate useful data from big data (Sivarajah et al., 2017).
Predictive analytics for collection development
Anticipating future trends and staying ahead of changing academic needs is critical in the fast-paced world of university libraries. Massis (2012) investigates the transformative role of predictive analytics in determining collection development methods. The use of predictive analytics is emphasized as a proactive tool, allowing libraries to move beyond reactive procedures and anticipate their customers’ future informational demands (Attaran and Attaran, 2018). Libraries can strategically increase their collections by harnessing information from user behaviour and trends, aligning resources with developing academic trends. This forward-thinking approach not only ensures that collections are relevant and up to date, but also positions libraries as dynamic knowledge hubs capable of fulfilling the changing demands of scholarly endeavours. Predictive analytics for collection creation, as highlighted by Adesina et al. (2024), marks a paradigm change, offering a data-driven foundation for informed decision-making and building a responsive and anticipatory climate within university libraries.
User experience enhancement through big data
The incorporation of big data into university libraries goes beyond traditional resource management, influencing user experience enhancement. Studies such as that by Hussain and Shahid (2022) highlight the transformative impact of big data insights on user-centric features, enabling a more customized and engaging library experience. By leveraging big data to analyse user behaviour, libraries can implement personalized recommendations and user-friendly navigation systems, significantly enhancing user satisfaction levels (Kumar et al., 2023). Such a user-centric strategy not only simplifies resource accessibility, but also helps to create a positive learning environment within the library setting. The findings of Nahotko et al. (2023) illustrate the larger implications of big data, demonstrating its potential to transform not only resource management, but also how users interact with and derive value from academic libraries.
Big data's contribution to academic research
Big data analytics emerges as a disruptive catalyst at the forefront of academic research within university libraries. Extensive research, such as that of Adaga et al. (2023), demonstrates the vital function that big data plays in offering insights into critical aspects of scholarly endeavours. Citation patterns, collaborative networks and new research trends are among these aspects. The deep contribution of big data goes beyond standard data analysis, promoting a collaborative and innovative research environment that contributes considerably to the growth of academic knowledge (Shahid and Sheikh, 2021). Big data provides a cornerstone in constructing a more informed and dynamic ecosystem for academic research within university libraries by highlighting patterns and connections within scholarly activity (Oladokun et al., 2023).
Addressing information overload
The exponential increase of information poses a severe challenge for university libraries in the form of information overload. In answer to this difficulty, libraries use the potential of big data analytics, as demonstrated by Islam et al. (2023). Libraries can efficiently organize and streamline information retrieval operations by strategically applying categorization, tagging and recommendation algorithms. These data-driven methods not only aid in the methodical organizing of massive volumes of information, but also enable users to navigate the complexities of resources. As a result, the challenges of information overload are effectively addressed, ensuring that users can access and utilize information with accuracy and relevance in the academic setting (Rahman and Islam, 2020).
Research gap
Despite the growing importance of big data in university libraries in Bangladesh, there is a significant research gap that has to be addressed. Several gaps in current understanding highlight areas that require further investigation.
The existing literature lacks an in-depth examination of how big data analytics specifically improves resource accessibility in university libraries in Bangladesh. Understanding the mechanisms by which big data optimizes resource availability is critical for making educated resource management decisions. While the concept of data-driven decision-making is recognized, there has been little thorough research on how big data impacts strategic decisions in university library administration. For effective library administration, more sophisticated knowledge of the decision-making processes driven by big data is required.
The use and impact of predictive analytics for collection development in university libraries has received little attention. For libraries to adapt to changing needs proactively, thorough research into how predictive analytics anticipates and integrates resources with academic trends is required. The importance of big data in improving the overall user experience within university libraries, including the development of user-friendly features, has received little attention. More research is needed to understand how big data analysis of user behaviour helps to provide a more personalized and satisfying library experience.
While the potential of big data to contribute to academic research is acknowledged, there has been little systematic investigation into how it specifically aids the advancement and expansion of research within university libraries. Understanding this contribution in greater depth is critical for optimizing research support services. The existing literature does not properly define the strategies and procedures for exploiting big data to combat information overload in university libraries. Additional research is required to find and detail successful methods for organizing and speeding up information retrieval procedures.
Closing these research gaps is critical for furthering our understanding of big data's impact on knowledge management in Bangladeshi university libraries. Future research can provide practical insights and recommendations for enhancing library services and responding to the expanding information world by addressing these shortcomings.
The studied literature reveals the diverse impact of big data on Bangladeshi university libraries. Big data emerges as a vital instrument for adjusting to the shifting needs of the academic community, from resource accessibility and data-driven decision-making to predictive analytics, user experience enhancement and contributions to academic research. While progress has been made, further study is needed to delve deeper into specific subtleties and provide useful insights for the ongoing optimization of knowledge management procedures in university libraries. This study adds to the current conversation around the juncture of big data and academic institutions, paving the way for future advances in library services and information distribution.
Objectives
The objectives of this study are outlined as follows to comprehensively analyze the role of big data within university libraries in Bangladesh.
Investigate the impact of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh; Assess the influence of big data on resource accessibility; Examine the role of big data in tailoring collections to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty; and Evaluate big data's contribution to academic research.
Methodology
The methodology employed in this study involved a survey approach across seven university libraries in Bangladesh, focusing on the exploration of big data's influence on library operations. The survey was conducted among 21 library and information science professionals, with three participants selected from each of the seven libraries to ensure a diverse range of perspectives. The participants were chosen through purposive sampling based on their roles and experience with big data in the library setting, with the aim of gathering valuable insights into the research questions (Patton, 2002). The data collection took place from 12 January to 25 March 2024.
To facilitate the interviews, a semi-structured questionnaire was meticulously designed. This questionnaire consisted of 26 open-ended questions organized into thematic categories, including topics such as the perception of big data's role, observed changes and innovations, the impact on resource accessibility, user-centric collections and personalization, decision-making processes, challenges in integration, user engagement and feedback, information management, collaboration with academic researchers, ethical considerations and future trends (Kvale, 1996). The semi-structured nature of the questionnaire allowed for flexibility during the interviews, enabling the researcher to probe deeper into emerging themes (Bryman, 2012).
Ethical considerations were central to the study, with informed consent being sought from all participants prior to the interviews (Creswell, 2013). The participants were assured of confidentiality, with measures put in place to anonymize their responses during data analysis and reporting. The interviews were recorded with the participants’ consent to ensure accuracy in the data collection. Data saturation was reached with 21 respondents, indicating that additional interviews would likely yield no new insights (Guest et al., 2006).
The data analysis was conducted using a thematic analysis approach, which involved coding the interview transcripts to identify key themes and patterns relevant to the research objectives (Braun and Clarke, 2006). This method allowed for a detailed examination of the qualitative data, ensuring that the analysis was grounded in the participants’ experiences and perspectives. The study's findings offer a comprehensive understanding of big data's role in transforming university libraries in Bangladesh, providing insights into both the benefits and the challenges associated with its adoption.
Data analysis process
To analyse the data collected, a systematic approach was adopted. First, all of the interview transcripts were transcribed verbatim and then subjected to thematic analysis. Thematic analysis was chosen for its effectiveness in identifying, analysing and reporting patterns (themes) within the data, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the participants’ perspectives on big data implementation in university libraries.
The analysis process began with an initial reading of the transcripts to familiarize ourselves with the data. During this phase, notes were made on emerging ideas and concepts. Following this, open coding was conducted, where significant statements related to big data's impact on resource accessibility, decision-making and user experience were highlighted. These codes were then grouped into broader themes reflecting the key areas of big data influence as reported by the respondents.
The next step involved axial coding, where connections between the codes were explored to understand how different aspects of big data implementation influenced each other. For example, the relationship between personalized resource accessibility and the decision-making process was examined closely. This allowed us to see how data-driven decisions contributed to more tailored resource collections.
Finally, selective coding was applied to refine the themes and ensure that they accurately represented the core ideas conveyed by the participants. The themes were then interpreted in the context of existing literature on big data in academic libraries, highlighting both the unique findings and corroborations with prior research.
Validation of findings
To ensure the reliability and validity of the analysis, member-checking was conducted. The participants were provided with a summary of the themes derived from their interviews and asked to confirm the accuracy and relevance of the interpretations. Additionally, peer debriefing with fellow researchers was employed to minimize researcher bias and ensure that the themes were grounded in the data.
By adopting this rigorous approach to the data analysis, the study provides a solid foundation for understanding the role of big data in enhancing resource accessibility, optimizing decision-making processes and improving user experiences in university libraries.
Sampled university libraries
A description of the seven sampled university libraries and the number of respondents from each is provided in Table 1, offering a contextual overview of the libraries involved in the study. This detailed methodological approach ensures that the research findings are both reliable and applicable to the broader academic context in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Agricultural University
The Bangladesh Agricultural University Library, established in 1961, serves as a central resource hub for the university's 6 faculties and 44 departments. With a vast collection of over 192,978 volumes, including 38,633 banded publications, the library provides access to a wide array of current journals and online resources, such as International Network for Advancing Science and Policy (INASP), Programme for Enhancement of Research Information (PERI), Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA), Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) and Bangladesh Journals Online. It plays a crucial role in supporting the academic and research needs of the university’s 8088 enrolled students and 567 faculty members, many of whom are engaged in ongoing research projects under the university's research system (Bangladesh Agricultural University, 2024).
University of Chittagong
The Central Library of the University of Chittagong, established in November 1966, began with a modest collection of 300 books and has since grown to house over 350,000 volumes and 40,000 e-books, supporting the university's diverse academic programmes. It is home to a rare collection of 600 manuscripts in Bengali, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and Urdu, dating from 1872 to 1953. The library also features a specialized centre equipped with software, hardware and a range of Braille books to cater to the needs of physically challenged students (University of Chittagong, 2024).
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology
The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Library, a four-storeyed building with 20,000 square feet of floor space, houses a collection of 142,913 information materials, including 125,066 books and 17,847 bound periodicals. The library offers a range of specialized facilities, including a reading room for rare and out-of-print books, research support through reference services and a rental library providing textbooks for a nominal fee. Additionally, the library is fully automated, featuring an online catalogue, institutional repositories, and 42 personal computers available for Internet browsing by students and faculty (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, 2024).
University of Science and Technology Chittagong
The University of Science and Technology Chittagong Library provides access to a wide array of digital resources, including 300 research journals through IGI Global and 3500 e-books via Wiley. The library also offers extensive access to 4.5 million documents through Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Xplore and 195 journals through Emerald, supporting the diverse academic needs of its faculties, which include Medicine, Basic Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Science, Engineering and Technology. Additionally, the library connects users to 194,000 leading journals and books through Research4Life, enhancing research and academic activities across various disciplines (University of Science and Technology Chittagong, 2024).
International Islamic University Chittagong
The International Islamic University Chittagong Central Library, established in 1995, has grown into one of the most comprehensive private university libraries in Bangladesh. It offers a fully automated system through Koha, with access to over 88,000 books, 35,000 online journals and 5 million e-theses, supporting extensive academic and research activities. Additionally, the library features specialized facilities, including a Female Academic Zone Library and seminar libraries for pharmacy and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, ensuring tailored resources for various departments (International Islamic University Chittagong, 2024).
Dhaka University
Dhaka University Library, established in 1921, began with 18,000 books and has since grown to house over 680,000 books and magazines, along with 30,000 rare manuscripts and 20,000 rare books. The library spans three buildings, offering specialized facilities such as reading rooms, reference services and a resource centre for visually impaired students. Additionally, it provides modern services, including an online public access catalogue, digital borrower identification cards, and Internet facilities to support the academic and research needs of its users (Dhaka University, 2024).
Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology
The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology Library plays a pivotal role in supporting higher education and research in engineering and applied sciences. Situated on the university’s 171-acre campus in natural surroundings, the library provides access to an extensive range of e-resources, including databases from leading academic publishers like Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Digital Library, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Joint Science and Technology Office (JSTO). It serves the academic community, including over 6000 students and more than 350 faculty members, offering both physical and digital resources to enhance learning and research outcomes (Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, 2024).
Findings
This section reports on the outcomes of a qualitative case study, which included semi-structured interviews with 21 library professionals from seven universities in Bangladesh. Thematic analysis was used to find patterns in the data, allowing for a thorough examination of big data's impact on university libraries.
Respondents’ demographic information
Twenty-one library professionals from seven universities in Bangladesh participated in this study, ranging from senior cataloguers to deputy librarians. The respondents were assigned serial numbers to ensure anonymity – Respondent 1 (abbreviated as R1) and so on. Table 2 shows their demographic information, including position, age range, years of experience and university affiliation.

Resource accessibility
The majority of the respondents stated that big data analytics had significantly improved resource accessibility in their libraries. The utilization of data-driven systems allows for a more focused and personalized approach to gathering and arranging resources, ensuring that users have easy access to relevant items. The participants discussed the trend towards user-centric collections, in which big data drives acquisition decisions based on user preferences and previous usage trends. Respondent 2 stated: Our library has been transformed into a personalized space that prioritizes user privacy and security. The focused strategy to gathering and organizing resources ensures that items that resonate with each individual's academic journey are easily accessible. It's not just about making things accessible; it's about establishing a dynamic and interesting environment in which people feel respected and understood.
Respondent 15 commented: Big data has been a game-changer for our library, particularly in terms of improving resource accessibility. The deployment of data-driven systems has enabled us to move away from generic collections and towards collections that are tailored to our users. This personalized approach ensures that our users may easily obtain information that corresponds to their academic requirements and preferences. It's about giving people a personalized experience that goes beyond plain accessibility; it's about making our library a location where they feel a strong connection to their learning path.
Respondent 7 highlighted: Big data analytics has caused a paradigm shift in how we think about resource accessibility in our library. The shift towards user-centric collections, informed by big data insights, has considerably improved our users’ overall experience. It's not simply a matter of making resources available; it's also a matter of making the correct resources easily accessible. Big data has enabled us to connect our purchases with the changing demands of our academic community, resulting in a library environment that is both dynamic and responsive to our users’ specific needs.
Decision-making processes
Big data, according to the respondents, contributes to educated decision-making processes. Big data enables managers to make strategic decisions about resource allocation, collection development and facility enhancements by offering insights into library usage, trends and requests. However, issues with data integration, human training and technological infrastructure were identified as major hindrances to the effective use of big data. In line with the overall consensus, the respondents highlighted the transformative impact of big data on decision-making within university libraries. Respondent 5 stated: Big data helps us make better decisions in the library. The insights gained from detailed assessments of usage, trends and requests enable us to make strategic decisions about resource allocation, collection-shaping and facility enhancement. However, it is not without difficulties. Big data has truly become a cornerstone for our decision-making processes at our university library. We can make informed and strategic decisions based on the precise data we obtain from evaluating library usage, developing trends and user expectations. Big data is at the centre of our decision-making, whether it's optimizing resource allocation, customizing our collection to fit current demands, or improving our facilities for a better user experience. Of course, there are obstacles, particularly in terms of data integration and the need for ongoing staff training, but the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks. Understanding library usage, identifying trends and responding to changing demands are all valuable skills. It directs our decisions that have a direct influence on our services, from efficiently allocating resources to shaping a collection that resonates with our academic community. However, we understand that problems such as data integration and the need for continual staff training are areas that need to be addressed carefully in order to maximize the efficacy of big data in our decision-making processes.
User experience
The role of big data in tailoring the user experience was a recurring theme throughout the interviews. The respondents mentioned the introduction of personalized recommendations, specialized services and smart navigation systems in their libraries, all with the goal of making the atmosphere more user-friendly and engaging. They consistently highlighted the significant role of big data in enhancing the user experience within their libraries. Respondent 1 stated: Our library experience has been truly personalized. From personalized services to simple navigation, it's not only about having access to resources; it's also about feeling understood. The incorporation of user feedback into big data analysis ensures that our innovations are not only user-friendly, but also sensitive to our academic community's ever-changing needs and preferences. The installation of tailored suggestions, customized services and user-friendly navigation tools has changed the way our users interact with the library. It goes beyond simply providing access to resources; it is about establishing an environment in which users feel that the library understands their individual academic path. The incorporation of user feedback into big data analysis guarantees that our changes are not just general additions, but are highly targeted to our academic community's increasing requirements and preferences. The impact of big data on the user experience at our library is palpable and far-reaching. Personalized recommendations and intuitive navigation, both of which are guided by big data insights, have become essential components of our services. It's about building an entertaining and user-friendly environment, not only accessibility. The continual incorporation of user feedback into big data analysis ensures that our library remains a responsive and dynamic institution, aligning our services with our academic community's ever-changing requirements and preferences.
Challenges and opportunities
The respondents viewed big data as a powerful tool for reducing information overload. Libraries can improve information retrieval operations by using effective classification, tagging and recommendation algorithms. Big data has also evolved as a collaborative tool for research support services, allowing libraries and academic researchers to work together more effectively. The respondents recognized big data as a valuable resource in tackling information overload and enhancing information retrieval processes within libraries, as illustrated by Respondent 10: Big data is our ally in the fight against information overload. Its powerful tools, ranging from categorization to recommendation algorithms, help to speed up our information retrieval processes. It's not just about managing massive amounts of data; it's also about providing our users with precision and relevance. Furthermore, big data has altered our relationship with researchers. Big data has proven essential in alleviating information overload within our library. By leveraging advanced tools like categorization and recommendation algorithms, we’ve been able to streamline retrieval processes and deliver more precise, relevant information to our users. Beyond managing vast data sets, big data plays a critical role in improving user experience. Additionally, it has reshaped our collaborative efforts with researchers, opening new channels for shared insights and academic advancements. Big data efficiency is visible in how users can more easily access the information they require. Furthermore, big data has changed the way we collaborate with scholars, offering up new channels for shared insights and breakthroughs. In our library, big data is a powerful force, particularly in overcoming the challenges of information overload. Its tools, such as categorization, tagging and recommendation algorithms, have greatly sped up our information retrieval procedures. It's much more than just managing massive volumes of data; it's about providing a refined and relevant experience to our users. Furthermore, big data has evolved into a collaborative tool, strengthening relationships between libraries and academic scholars. The insights gained from joint efforts help not just to improve information management, but also to boost academic research at our school.
Academic research impact
Big data has been shown to be quite useful in studying citation trends and collaboration networks in academic research. The respondents stated that insights from big data analytics help academics make educated decisions regarding their work, creating a collaborative and innovative research atmosphere. They highlighted the growing importance of big data in academic research, particularly in studying citation trends and collaboration networks, which have become pivotal aspects of scholarly endeavours, as Respondent 18 commented: Big data is transforming academic research. Understanding citation patterns and collaborative networks is no longer a problem; it's a competitive advantage. Big data analytics insights enable researchers to make educated decisions, encouraging a collaborative and innovative research environment. Big data is a game-changer in our academic setting, particularly in the realm of academic research. Understanding citation trends and collaborative networks, which was difficult before, has now become a competitive benefit. Big data analytics gives insights that allow researchers to make more informed judgements about their studies. It is not only about data; it is also about creating a collaborative and innovative research atmosphere. Big data has had a dramatic impact on academic research, affecting how we approach and progress knowledge within our institution. Big data plays a transformative role in our academic research endeavours. Understanding citation patterns and collaboration networks has progressed from a problem to a strategic benefit. Big data analytics insights are a significant resource for academics, assisting them in making educated decisions regarding their work. The respondents emphasized the significance of continual adaptation and innovation, viewing big data's impact on university libraries as a process that is still unfolding. To keep up with technology changes and shifting academic needs, a proactive strategy was regarded as vital. Some of the respondents stressed the importance of strong data governance regulations in libraries to ensure the ethical and responsible use of big data. They highlighted the imperative of continual adaptation and innovation in navigating the evolving landscape of university libraries amidst the influence of big data, underscoring the importance of staying abreast of technological advancements and understanding shifting academic needs.
Respondent 7 stated: Big data is changing our world. Continuous adaptation and innovation are not simply options; they are required in order to navigate the changing landscape of university libraries. The keys to ensuring our relevance include staying abreast of technical breakthroughs and understanding changing academic needs. Equally important is the requirement for strong data governance. Big data's impact on university libraries goes beyond the present; it's about reshaping our future. Continuous adaptation and innovation are now required in order to navigate the changing landscape of university libraries. Keeping up with technology advances and understanding changing academic needs are critical to sustaining our relevance. The future of libraries is inextricably linked to our ability to embrace innovation and integrate new technologies proactively. Furthermore, we understand the crucial need of strong data governance in ensuring the ethical and responsible use of big data, thereby crafting a future in which its impact is not just transformative but also long-lasting. In our library, we see big data as a force that shapes our future, not just a tool of the present. Continuous adaptation and innovation are not options in the dynamic landscape of university libraries, but rather necessities. Keeping up with technological advances and adapting to changing academic needs are critical to ensuring our library's relevance. Equally important is the requirement for strong data governance policies – the assurance that as we embrace the potential presented by big data, we do so in an ethical and responsible manner, ensuring a future in which the influence of big data in libraries is not just transformative but also sustainable.
Discussion
This section provides a comprehensive evaluation of the findings from the qualitative study on the impact of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh. This synthesis aims to offer a deeper understanding of the various consequences, challenges and opportunities that big data presents within academic libraries’ knowledge management contexts.
While all seven university libraries have benefited from big data's transformative power, the extent and nature of this impact varies significantly among them. For instance, Dhaka University Library, with its extensive collection and established infrastructure, has leveraged big data more effectively in personalizing user experiences and optimizing resource accessibility compared to the smaller and newer University of Science and Technology Chittagong Library. Dhaka University's integration of user feedback into big data analysis has resulted in more targeted and user-friendly improvements, reflecting its advanced stage of big data adoption.
In contrast, the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology Library, with its focus on engineering and applied sciences, has used big data predominantly to enhance research support services, helping researchers uncover new trends and potential collaborations. This approach differs from that of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Library, where big data's impact is more pronounced in resource management and accessibility, catering to a large student body across diverse academic disciplines.
Despite their robust collections, the International Islamic University Chittagong Library and the University of Chittagong Library face challenges in fully integrating big data due to limitations in their technological infrastructure and staff training. These libraries are in the process of overcoming these barriers to realize the full potential of big data in decision-making and personalized services.
The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Library has made significant strides in using big data for both resource management and user engagement, balancing the demands of a highly specialized academic community with the need for innovation in service delivery. Meanwhile, the University of Science and Technology Chittagong Library, though still developing its big data capabilities, shows potential in using big data to foster collaboration between library services and academic researchers, albeit on a smaller scale compared to more established libraries.
Overall, while the libraries share common challenges in data integration and technological infrastructure, their approaches to leveraging big data are shaped by their unique contexts, including size, specialization and available resources. The findings suggest that big data is having a profound and revolutionary impact on Bangladeshi university libraries, but the degree of this impact is influenced by each library's specific circumstances. The future implications highlight the importance of ongoing adaptation, careful evaluation of obstacles and a commitment to ethical use. As university libraries navigate this transformative landscape, they will be able not only to meet the evolving demands of their academic communities, but also to actively shape the future of knowledge management.
Big data's revolutionary effect on improving resource accessibility in university libraries aligns with previous research (Olarongbe et al., 2023). The transition to user-centric collections, influenced by user choice and past usage patterns, marks a significant shift towards creating a dynamic and engaging experience. This user-centric approach, powered by big data, not only enhances access, but also contributes to overall satisfaction and engagement (Hussain and Shahid, 2022). Libraries can continuously refine their collections to meet the evolving needs of the academic community by employing big data analytics.
The respondents’ universal agreement on the role of big data in informed decision-making processes is consistent with previous literature (Chatterjee et al., 2023). Big data insights enable administrators to effectively deploy resources, shape collections and improve facilities. However, the recognition of the challenges in data integration, staff training and technological infrastructure indicates that realizing big data's full potential will require a more nuanced approach (Shawang et al., 2024). Libraries should invest in staff training and a robust technological infrastructure to capitalize on big data's benefits in shaping the future of library services.
Big data's role in personalizing the user experience in university libraries aligns with current trends (Ajani et al., 2024). From specialized services to intuitive navigation, big data transforms libraries from mere resource repositories into vital components of each user's educational journey. Integrating user feedback into big data analysis ensures that improvements are not only user-friendly but also responsive to changing demands and preferences (Zhang et al., 2024). Through big data, libraries can position themselves as dynamic partners in their users’ educational endeavours, continuously enhancing the user experience based on feedback.
The recognition of big data as a tool for reducing information overload is crucial and aligns with earlier research (Saxena and Lamest, 2018). The respondents highlighted how big data's collaborative nature in research support services opens doors to new research trends, potential partners and opportunities for academic advancement. However, the challenges identified, such as data integration and providing a robust technological infrastructure, underscore the importance of caution in implementing big data initiatives (Turikpenova and Abitova, 2023). Libraries must balance leveraging big data's collaborative potential for research support with addressing the challenges that may hinder its effective deployment.
Big data's contribution to understanding citation patterns and collaboration networks in academic research aligns with the transformative impact described in previous studies (Udeh et al., 2024). By empowering researchers to make informed decisions, big data fosters a collaborative and innovative research environment. Libraries play a critical role not only in providing resources, but also in facilitating a research ecosystem. Big data acts as a catalyst for significant collaborations and knowledge advancements, establishing libraries as essential components of the academic research landscape.
The respondents’ forward-thinking attitudes emphasize the need for continuous adaptation and innovation in the evolving landscape of university libraries. The importance of strong data governance policies to ensure ethical and responsible use is consistent with broader discussions on data ethics and privacy (Lamba, 2022). The impact of big data on university libraries is dynamic, requiring libraries to remain proactive in keeping pace with technological advancements while maintaining ethical standards. Commitment to responsible use ensures that big data's transformative impact is sustainable.
In conclusion, the findings suggest that big data is having a profound and revolutionary impact on Bangladeshi university libraries. Big data emerges as a multifaceted force, enhancing resource accessibility, guiding decision-making processes, personalizing user experiences and contributing to academic research. The future implications emphasize the importance of ongoing adaptation, the careful evaluation of challenges and a commitment to ethical use. As university libraries navigate this transformative landscape, they will not only meet the evolving demands of their academic communities, but also actively shape the future of knowledge management. This study provides valuable insights for libraries seeking to leverage big data's power to enhance their roles as dynamic and essential contributors to the academic environment.
Conclusion
This study has illuminated the substantial impact of big data on university libraries in Bangladesh, highlighting its transformative influence on resource accessibility, decision-making processes, user experiences, academic research and information management. Through a qualitative case study involving interviews with 21 library professionals from seven university libraries, the research reveals how big data is shaping the evolving landscape of knowledge management in academic settings.
The comprehensive data analysis within this study highlights how libraries in Bangladesh have utilized big data analytics to support these conclusions. The thematic analysis of the interview data reveals the critical role that big data plays in personalizing resource accessibility, optimizing decision-making and enhancing user experiences. The findings are grounded in a systematic analysis of participant responses, ensuring that the conclusions drawn are both robust and reflective of the actual experiences of library professionals.
However, it is important to acknowledge the limitations of this study. The findings are based on a purposive sample of libraries and library professionals, which means that the results may not be generalized to all university libraries in Bangladesh or beyond. Additionally, the study's focus on a specific context may limit its applicability to different cultural or institutional environments.
Despite these limitations, the findings offer valuable insights for readers, librarians and society at large. For librarians, the study provides a road map for harnessing big data to enhance library services, improve decision-making and create personalized user experiences. For the academic community, the research underscores the potential of big data to facilitate more effective resource management and foster collaboration in research efforts. For society, the study highlights the role of university libraries as dynamic knowledge hubs that can actively contribute to the global growth of knowledge management through innovative and data-driven approaches.
As university libraries continue to navigate the era of digital transformation, the benefits and challenges associated with big data adoption will remain central to their evolution. The user-centric and data-driven initiatives identified in this study provide a framework for libraries seeking to strengthen their roles as key contributors to academic and societal progress. Future research should explore the scalability, ethical considerations and long-term implications of big data initiatives to ensure that libraries fully harness the potential of this technological revolution in a responsible and sustainable manner. In this way, university libraries in Bangladesh can not only keep pace with the changing needs of their academic communities, but also actively contribute to the global advancement of knowledge management.
