Abstract

Upcoming Meetings
There is still an opportunity to register for the 2002 Advanced Team Physician Course, jointly sponsored by AOSSM, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. This meeting takes place December 5 to 8, 2002, at the Marriott Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. The topics during the 3.5-day conference address many issues a team physician must confront, including legal implications in several sports-related contexts.
Look for the preliminary programs this winter for the course on Sports Medicine 2003: An NFL Perspective. This popular meeting is scheduled for May 8 to 10, 2003, at the Grand Hyatt in San Francisco, California.
Research
Applications are now available online at www.sportsmed.org for the Cabaud, Excellence in Research, and O'Donoghue Awards. Recipients of these special papers will win a monetary award and a coveted spot on the 29th Annual Program in San Diego, California (July 20 to 23, 2003).
The Young Investigator Grant is a superb opportunity for junior researchers. The final deadline is December 1, 2002. Even if you were not able to take advantage of the prereview process (August deadline), you are encouraged to consider applying for the grant. A maximum of two grants of $40,000 over 2 years is awarded. Applications can be downloaded from the AOSSM website, www.sportsmed.org, under “Research.”
2003 Traveling Fellowship Visits Pacific Rim
Applications are currently being accepted for the 2003 Pacific Rim Traveling Fellowship. The Traveling Fellowship is an opportunity to share personal and professional experience while sampling a few of the cultures of the Pacific. The tour will visit Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, and New Zealand. The participants include a Godfather—an established, well-known practitioner in sports medicine—and three Fellows. Qualified Fellow applicants are orthopaedic surgeons within 10 years of completing their postgraduate training (including a sports medicine fellowship) and are demonstrated leaders in promoting and practicing orthopaedic sports medicine. Travelers will have the opportunity to view live or cadaveric surgery, or both, tour surgical and rehabilitation facilities, observe local sporting events, and spend time socially, as well as professionally, with regional experts in sports medicine. Persons interested in this unique opportunity can download an application from the AOSSM website, www.sportsmed.org, or they can call the Society office at 847/292-4900. Applications are due in the AOSSM office by December 2, 2002.
