In this article, I set down some of my experiences as the only white member in a
group which was set up to discuss and to work on racial differences. I experienced a
frightening sense of exclusion and working through difficult feelings in the group
led me to an understanding of the discrimination black people encounter in their
everyday lives. Many of my emotions and reactions I found echoed in those of the
black African writer Frantz Fanon.
