The toughness properties of long glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics were characterized using different testing modes including tensile, pendulum type impact, falling weight impact, and fracture toughness tests. The effects of glass fiber length, resin type, temperature, and testing mode on the toughness properties of reinforced thermoplastics were also studied. It was found that a longer glass fiber length and nylon 6/6 matrix lead to higher toughness properties. The effect of long glass fibers was most prominent in Izod impact properties. The reduction of toughness at-40'C compared with room temperature was much less for the long glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics.
