Abstract
In academic publishing, much of the work that advances science occurs behind the scenes. Among the most critical yet least visible contributors are peer reviewers, the experts whose careful evaluation, methodological insight, and constructive feedback ensure that published research meets the standards for credible, clinically meaningful scholarship. Despite their essential role, peer reviewers are often unrecognized, contributing substantial time and expertise without formal recognition or academic credit. 1
At the Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal (CARJ), reviewer excellence is a cornerstone of high-quality scientific and educational content. The CARJ Outstanding Reviewer Awards celebrate reviewers who consistently provide rigorous, thoughtful, and timely evaluations. In parallel, CARJ has invested in growing the pipeline of skilled reviewers through the CARJ Reviewer Mentorship Program (RMP). Building on these 2 streams—recognition of excellence and investment in reviewer development—we are introducing CARJ Reviewer Direct as an added benefit to thank CARJ’s top reviewers and mentors.
Why Peer Review Matters
Peer review is an essential quality-control mechanism that ensures accuracy, validity, and scientific significance before publication. Skilled reviewers identify errors, highlight methodological weaknesses, and provide constructive feedback that improves the quality and clarity of manuscripts. 2 They uphold the standards of evidence that underpin credible science and clinical practice.
Participation in peer review also offers personal and professional benefits. Reviewers stay current with emerging research, refine their analytical and writing skills, and contribute to advancing their discipline. 3
Nevertheless, peer review is demanding, time-intensive work that is rarely acknowledged. Most reviewers receive no protected time, financial support, or promotion credit for their contributions. 1 This lack of formal recognition stands in stark contrast to the critical role reviewers play in maintaining scientific integrity and advancing medical knowledge. As the volume of journal submissions continues to rise, recruiting and retaining qualified, engaged reviewers has become increasingly challenging. 4
Recognizing and rewarding reviewers may strengthen engagement, retention, and review quality. A recent survey of radiology authors found that 61% of respondents believed reviewers should be rewarded. 5 CARJ Reviewer Direct addresses this by linking reviewer excellence to meaningful academic opportunity, acknowledging that peer review is not a peripheral service but an integral part of scholarly contribution.
Inspiration and Program Overview
A recent editorial in Radiology: Imaging Cancer introduced a “Free Pass” program recognizing exemplary reviewers by guaranteeing full peer review for one manuscript submission. 6 The concept of rewarding reviewer excellence through a tangible benefit resonated with the CARJ editorial team.
In that spirit, CARJ Reviewer Direct adapts this idea to the Canadian context, emphasizing collaboration, mentorship, and inclusivity. Beginning July 1, 2026, all recipients of the CARJ Outstanding Reviewer Award and all mentors participating in the CARJ Reviewer Mentorship Program for that year will be eligible for one Reviewer Direct submission opportunity within the subsequent 12 months.
This privilege allows a manuscript on which the awardee or mentor is a co-author to proceed directly to external peer review, bypassing the initial editorial triage step and potential for a reject without review (or desk reject) decision. The reviewer does not need to be the first or corresponding author but must be listed among the authors. Each Reviewer Direct opportunity applies to a single submission, is non-transferable, and guarantees peer review, but not acceptance. All manuscripts will undergo the same rigorous peer review and editorial evaluation as other submissions. Authors of these submissions will, in turn, benefit from the same constructive peer review process they have championed and contributed to themselves—strengthening their work even if it is not ultimately accepted for publication in CARJ.
By linking recognition to opportunity, CARJ Reviewer Direct aims to:
Acknowledge exceptional service and scholarly expertise;
Encourage continued participation in high-quality peer review and mentorship; and
Reinforce the connection between reviewing and publishing as complementary aspects of academic advancement.
To ensure the program achieves its goals, CARJ will monitor Reviewer Direct uptake, use, and influence on review completion rates, timeliness, and overall engagement. These data will inform periodic evaluations and refinements to ensure the program continues to support both reviewers and the broader radiology community effectively.
Looking Ahead
The CARJ Reviewer Direct initiative reaffirms the journal’s commitment to recognizing and supporting the individuals whose insight, diligence, and intellectual generosity sustain scientific progress. It represents both gratitude and an investment in the future of Canadian radiology scholarship.
Beginning July 1, 2026, outstanding reviewers and mentors will not only be recognized by name but also empowered with a mechanism that brings their expertise full circle, from improving others’ work to advancing their own. Optimizing peer review depends not only on efficiency and transparency but also on cultivating a culture that values the reviewer’s role as an integral part of the publication process. CARJ Reviewer Direct supports this vision by affirming that reviewer excellence has a measurable impact and deserves meaningful recognition.
