Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore Doe’s newknowings on hope and to deepen understanding of hope as a universal humanuniverse living experience through the lens of the humanbecoming paradigm.
In the humanbecoming paradigm (Parse, 2021), hope appears not as something sought or retained but as an intricate and mysterious rhythm in living quality. Hope has long been studied within diverse disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, and theology. In the humanbecoming paradigm, it is a universal humanuniverse living experience that emerges with meaning, rhythm, and an everchanging horizon of possibles. Parse’s (2021) worldview situates hope as arising with the indivisible, unpredictable, everchanging cocreation of humanuniverse. Doe’s (2021) Parsesciencing inquiry revealed that hope unfolds moment to moment as meanings and patterns shift in the becoming visible–invisible becoming of the emerging now.
In this Parsesciencing inquiry, Doe (2021) investigated the universal humanuniverse living experience of hope and illuminated the discerning extant moment of hope as “envisioning possibilities with contentment, as tenacious forbearance amid the arduous arises with treasured affiliations”(p. 139). These newknowings for hope give new perspectives into the universal humanuniverse living experience of hope and provide a unique contribution to the discipline of nursing. The purpose of this paper is to explore Doe’s newknowings on hope and to deepen understanding of hope as a universal humanuniverse living experience through the lens of the humanbecoming paradigm.
As Doe (2021) stated, envisioning possibilities with contentment is “experiencing hope as coming to know possible changes to come and seeing the way they envision as a true possibility while feeling contented” (p. 143). Envisioning possibilities with contentment reflects the first principle of the humanbecoming paradigm and the concept of imaging. In the humanbecoming paradigm, imaging is elucidated as the “reflective-prereflective coming to know the explicit-tacit all-at-once” (Parse, 2021, p. 42). In Doe’s (2021) inquiry, individuals described hope as “looking forward,” “feeling happy in moments,” and “choosing to believe positive outcomes” (p. 143). These expressions shed light on imaging and the universal humanuniverse living experience of hope. Here, contentment does not suggest resignation but reflects an emergence of new possibles unfolding in moments of contentment. Historians in this inquiry revealed that hope was “expecting chaos will becoming calmness” (Doe, 2021, p. 143). This longing emphasizes the paradoxical nature of hope.
The paradoxical nature of hope is further emphasized in tenacious forbearance amid the arduous. Doe (2021) explicated tenacious forbearance amid the arduous as “persevering, moving through the challenges” (p. 144), sustaining despite adversity. Tenacious forbearance amid the arduous is connected to the third principle of humanbecoming and the concept of powering. In the humanbecoming paradigm, powering is explained as the “pushing-resisting of affirming–not affirming being in light of nonbeing” (p. 52). In Doe’s (2021) inquiry, historians stated that hope was “coming along with courage,” “believing in resilience,” “neither giving up nor losing the will to thrive,” and “perseverance” (p. 144). These statements highlight powering and how individuals experience powering in hope. Tenacious forbearance amid the arduous is cocreated in living quality as individuals attend-distance with cherished others.
As Doe (2021) further explicated, treasured affiliations are “rhythmical patterns of attending-distancing, connected with family members, communities, God, ideas, and situations” (p. 44). Treasured affiliations illustrates the second principle of humanbecoming and the paradox of connecting-separating. Connecting-separating is “attending-distancing; it is living being with and apart from others, ideas, objects, and situations all-at-once” (Parse, 2021, p. 50). Doe’s (2021) historians expressed that hope was “enjoying my grandchildren,” “trusting God,” “wishing my family a smooth transition,” and “believing in others” (p. 44). From these statements, it is evident that hope arises with cherished relationships. These treasured affiliations offer comfort and encouragement for individuals who experience hope.
Doe’s (2021) discerning extant moment offers new insight into how individuals envision possibles while all-at-once persist amid challenges with cherished others in the universal humanuniverse living experience of hope. These unique contributions for the discipline reside now within a longstanding scholarly lineage of humanbecoming and provide varied perspectives for hope. In a comprehensive review of humanbecoming-guided investigations (2007-2020), Kabigting and Shaughnessy (2022) demonstrated that hope consistently surfaced across a wide array of universal humanuniverse living experiences. Their synthesis identified anticipating possibles is visioning the not-yet (Kabigting & Shaughnessy, 2022, p. 212), an enduring thread woven through the literature, affirming hope as an enduring pattern of living quality.
Within these investigations, hope appeared in studies focused on feeling unsure, taking life day-by-day, trusting another, and others (Kabigting & Shaughnessy, 2022). Even when the primary phenomenon was not labeled as “hope,” the new knowledge reflected emerging possibles, rhythms of enduring with difficulty, and the presence of cherished relationships. These reflections echo Doe’s (2021) discerning extant moment, envisioning possibilities with contentment, as tenacious forbearance amid the arduous arises with treasured affiliations. Collectively, the newknowings that arose from Doe’s (2021) inquiry affirm that hope is not an isolated theme but an enduring rhythm and pattern in living quality.
Doe’s (2021) inquiry enriches disciplinary understanding of hope by illuminating how individuals live this universal humanuniverse living experience in the emerging now. With imaging, powering, and connecting-separating, hope surfaces as an everchanging cocreation of humanuniverse. These newknowings affirm hope as a pattern of living quality, chosen moment to moment as individuals cocreate their ways of living in the becoming visible–invisible becoming of the emerging now.
These insights align closely with the extant humanbecoming literature. The extensive review conducted by Kabigting and Shaughnessy (2022) demonstrated that hope consistently appeared across myriad universal humanuniverse living experiences, underscoring its foundational presence within the humanbecoming paradigm. Even in investigations where hope was not the central phenomenon, the patterns and rhythms of hope were evident. Together, these insights and contributions reveal how hope emerges as a profound and enduring expression of humanuniverse dignity and living quality in the emerging now.
