The effect of filler wires ER316L and ER310 on the tensile strength of tungsten inert gas AISI 304L weldments using the Grey-Taguchi methodology

This research lies in its comprehensive approach to optimizing the tungsten inert gas welding process by examining the impact of different filler wires (ER316L and ER310) on the mechanical properties of the welds. The study applies a Grey-based Taguchi method to optimize key welding parameters, such as welding current, gas flow rate, and arc gap, to achieve the best weld quality. By comparing the tensile properties of the welds made with different filler materials, this research provides valuable insights into selecting the appropriate filler wire for specific applications. The use of Grey relational analysis in conjunction with the Taguchi method to optimize multi-variable parameters is a novel approach that improves the precision and predictability of weld quality. The parameters tested include welding current, gas flow rate, and arc gap. Gas flow rates were maintained at 10, 12, and 13 L/min, while welding currents were set to 80, 90, and 100 A. The tensile properties of the weldments were evaluated for both filler materials and compared. In the optimal settings, the gas flow rate and arc gap remained constant, but a slight increase in welding current was needed when using ER316L filler to weld 304L stainless steel. The tensile properties of the ER316L filler were found to be superior to those of the welds made with ER310 filler.
