Abstract
An appraisal of the LAMSAC/DES report on "The Staffing of Public Libraries" (I976) in the light of detailed applications of the formulae in four library authorities of widely differing structures. The examination concentrates on the general professional and non- professional formulae since this is the area which involves the majority of public library staff, although PLRG has also considered the specialist areas of operation. The report is criticized for failing to take the opportunity of suggesting staffing levels suitable for a user orientated public library service.
