Abstract
In an era of environmental and social crises, integrating Indigenous knowledge into Education for Sustainable Development is critical for fostering a holistic, inclusive and effective approach to sustainability. This article explores the essential role of Indigenous knowledge in contextualizing education, highlighting its contributions to sustainable resource management, environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. Historically marginalized, Indigenous wisdom offers practical solutions for contemporary global challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss. By valuing and incorporating Indigenous perspectives into educational frameworks, education stakeholders can create more robust and culturally relevant learning experiences that empower communities and promote social equity. Examples from various countries, including Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Peru and Canada, illustrate the transformative impact of blending Indigenous and scientific knowledge. The article argues for a paradigm shift in education, emphasizing the importance of respecting and utilizing Indigenous knowledge to achieve a more sustainable and just world for future generations.

In an era marked by rapid environmental degradation, social inequalities and economic instability, education plays a critical role in shaping a sustainable future. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers learners of all ages to make informed decisions and take responsible actions to achieve environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society.
ESD is a holistic approach that integrates principles and practices of sustainability into all aspects of education and learning. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of global challenges and equips individuals with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to address these issues effectively. Its focus on education quality, beyond merely access and measured learning outcomes, means that sustainability education is rooted in more than what is taught—how it is taught through localized, contextualized approaches is just as important or more. To create a more sustainable world, it is crucial to recognize the value of diverse knowledge systems, including those of Indigenous peoples (UNESCO, 2016, 2017a, 2020, 2024a).
Indigenous knowledge, encompassing cultural traditions, values and beliefs passed down through generations, offers invaluable wisdom for sustainable living and environmental stewardship (Magni, 2016; Nakashima et al., 2017). This knowledge is essential for preserving the cultural identity and heritage of Indigenous communities, as well as offering practical solutions for sustainable resource management and climate change adaptation. Integrating Indigenous knowledge into ESD creates inclusive educational frameworks that tap into Indigenous expertise and understanding of local ecosystems.
Incorporating Indigenous knowledge benefits all stakeholders. Indigenous learners connect with a curriculum that reflects their culture, promoting empowerment. Non-Indigenous learners gain diverse perspectives, enriching their educational experience and preparing them for sustainability and social justice issues. For teachers, it enhances instructional practices, improving student engagement and outcomes.
This approach also benefits policymakers and curriculum planners. Recognizing Indigenous knowledge helps create equitable policies and educational materials that promote cultural diversity and address real-world challenges. Ultimately, it supports the holistic development of individuals and communities in a rapidly changing world.
This article will examine the contextualization of education systems vis-à-vis Indigenous cultures and knowledge. These Indigenous knowledge systems contribute to quality education and ESD by advancing more holistic curricula and pedagogy, and promoting cultural diversity, inclusion, community empowerment and environmental stewardship.
The Historical Undervaluation of Indigenous Knowledge
Historically, educational efforts have often undermined, marginalized or ignored local, Indigenous wisdom and knowledge, considering it less valuable than Western or ‘modern’ scientific knowledge. This in turn has stigmatized Indigenous peoples as ‘backward’, resulting in misrepresentation of a wide array of knowledge and approaches (da Silva et al., 2023, Druker-Ibáñez & Cáceres-Jensen, 2022; Moore & Nesterov, 2020; Tchombe & Shey, 2017; UNESCO, 2017b). This undervaluation of Indigenous knowledge reflects broader patterns of colonialism and cultural imperialism, contributing to the erosion of Indigenous identities and languages.
In these contexts, education systems often excluded Indigenous languages and knowledge systems, promoting instead a Eurocentric curriculum and language that alienated Indigenous students. This has led to a loss of cultural heritage and intergenerational knowledge transmission and the marginalization of traditional practices and wisdom, which are deeply rooted in the lived experiences and cultural contexts of Indigenous communities (da Silva et al., 2023; Tchombe & Shey, 2017; UNESCO, 2017b). Such an attitude disregards the richness and relevance of Indigenous knowledge and perpetuates a cycle of cultural erosion and loss of biodiversity.
Indigenous knowledge is still threatened by these historical trends. Indigenous knowledge about ecosystems, conservation methods, plant life, animal behaviour and many other aspects of the natural world is embedded in Indigenous languages (LaPier, 2018). Education is critical for learner’s development, but education may also compromise the transmission of Indigenous knowledge which often exists in a non-written format (Nakashima et al., 2017) because the national languages are used as the language of instruction, instead of vernacular languages. This has been a long-standing challenge for many countries and formal school systems that have multilingual environments and that have been influenced by colonial or global powers (da Silva et al., 2023; Tchombe & Shey, 2017; UNESCO, 2017b). Furthermore, traditionally, with formal education, children learn passively in classroom settings, rather than engaging in hands-on experiential learning on the land with elders of their communities. This contributes to disrupting the intergenerational transmission of Indigenous knowledge (UNDESA, 2023).
Embracing Indigenous Knowledge Systems
While there is a growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous wisdom for education systems, much work remains to be done to fully appreciate and integrate it. UNESCO, in its ‘Policy on Engaging with Indigenous Peoples’ encourages countries to ensure that
effectively including indigenous peoples’ knowledge, holistic worldviews and cultures in the development of education (…) would provide meaningful learning opportunities that are equally available, accessible, acceptable and appropriate for all indigenous peoples. (…) this will also enable indigenous peoples to share their cultural, spiritual, linguistic and traditional knowledge and techniques, which represent substantial elements of human wisdom and heritage, to enrich education systems. (UNESCO, 2018, p. 12)
Moore and Nesterov therefore propose
futures frameworks that offer approaches to learning built on Indigenous cultural practices, standpoints, and values. Indigenous knowledge systems are presented as diverse and organic ecosystems and frames for futures in which non-Indigenous peoples learn to engage with and relate to the world in more holistic and healthy ways. Such frameworks incorporate Indigenous systems and approaches with leadership from Indigenous Elders, communities, artists, storytellers, musicians, agriculturalists, aqua culturalists, and other stakeholders. (Moore & Nesterov, 2020).
These efforts require a shift in educational paradigms to give greater value to the contributions of Indigenous wisdom in addressing contemporary global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Recognizing and valuing Indigenous knowledge is not only a matter of justice but also a necessary step towards cultural revitalization and reconciliation, the inclusion of which is not only for the benefit of Indigenous peoples but for all learners. To foster a more inclusive and respectful educational environment, it is crucial to recognize and integrate Indigenous knowledge, valuing it on par with other knowledge systems.
Contextualizing Education and the Role of Indigenous Knowledge
Contextualizing education is crucial for making learning relevant and meaningful to students’ lives and communities. It involves tailoring educational content and methods to reflect the cultural, social and environmental contexts in which learners live. ESD promotes this contextualization and the integration of local, Indigenous knowledge and approaches into education systems. The ESD approach ensures that education is not just an abstract exercise but a practical tool that empowers students to address real-world challenges. By integrating local knowledge, traditions and values into the curriculum, educators can create a more engaging and effective learning experience that resonates with students’ lived experiences and fosters a deeper connection to their heritage and environment.
McGovern and Richardson (2012) summarize that
ESD is likely to be most effective when it recognizes the preexisting strengths of local people, builds on their knowledge, strengthens information sharing networks within and between communities, builds systematic connections between schools and communities, youth and elders, and formal and nonformal education, enhances local capacity for innovation, and mainstreams a sustainability perspective across school subject areas.
The following sections highlight opportunities where the ESD approach can utilize local knowledge to strengthen curricula, teaching and learning, enhance cultural diversity, and social equity; to promote community-based approaches; and to foster environmental stewardship among present and future generations. Indigenous knowledge is pivotal in contextualizing education, particularly in promoting sustainable development.
Strengthening Curricula, Pedagogy and Learning Materials with Indigenous Knowledge
By incorporating Indigenous knowledge into educational curricula, schools can better address the needs of teachers and learners at local levels, adapting materials to be culturally and linguistically relevant. In this manner, subjects like science which predominantly follow Western and Eurocentric approaches can be adapted to have more meaning to students in other parts of the world. This not only enriches the educational experience but also helps preserve and revitalize Indigenous cultures and wisdom, which are often at risk of being lost in the face of globalization and modernization (UNESCO, 2017a).
For example, in Zimbabwe, low academic achievement in science has been linked to a lack of contextualized education for disadvantaged communities. UNESCO mobilized researchers and teachers within the Sustainability Starts with Teachers programme, which aimed to address this issue by utilizing the availability of diverse knowledge that can be harnessed from nature, biosphere reserves and Indigenous cultural heritage and practices to strengthen the teaching and learning of science.
Teacher educators at the Bindura University of Science Education worked on the development of new science teaching materials utilizing Indigenous knowledge for two new courses: Culture and Heritage in Science Education and Teaching Science for Sustainability. The materials were developed utilizing resources available in the Middle Zambezi Biosphere Reserve, taking into consideration how Indigenous knowledge systems have sustained the local environment and biospheres for years.
During the piloting of the project, it was clear that some learners fail science due to non-accessibility of science knowledge, and not necessarily that science is too difficult. This means that learners had not been provided learning instruction and resources that reflected their local contexts. Before the revised materials, some students had failed to progress; however, with the new methods and additional content during the last semester in 2019, all 130 students passed. This can be attributed to the way the course content was contextualized, and where the teaching was authentic, participatory and easy to understand (UNESCO, 2022, 2023).
In Canada, as a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015, provincial governments have been tasked with integrating traditional Indigenous knowledge throughout their education systems (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2015).
In the province of Saskatchewan, the updated education framework, Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Framework, foundationally places Indigenous knowledge systems, cultures and languages within the structures, policies and curricula to ensure an equitable and inclusive system that benefits all learners. Inspiring Success supports reconciliation, treaty education, Indigenous cultures and languages in the classroom, and the infusion of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into all renewed curricula to benefit all learners (Government of Saskatchewan, 2018).
As part of this effort, Indigenous elders and community members were invited to share how Indigenous knowledge and practice contributes to science in their communities during the revision and enhancement of their curriculum. They were able to review materials to avoid misrepresentations and have been encouraged to participate in classroom teaching and activities to share their knowledge with learners. The preliminary results indicate a correlation between this inclusive approach and the successful uptake and implementation of the curriculum, including keeping the traditionally marginalized Indigenous learners more engaged in learning (Kim, 2016; Kim & Dionne, 2014).
This integration and inclusion of traditional knowledge and voices can empower Indigenous students by validating their knowledge systems within the educational framework, potentially improving their engagement and academic success. The inclusion of Indigenous knowledge thus becomes a pathway to not only a more sustainable future but also a more equitable and inclusive educational environment (Nakashima et al., 2017).
While examples like this show the value of contextualizing Indigenous knowledge in the curriculum, progress to integrate and update curricula can be slow. In 2023, UNESCO commissioned a study that reviewed Grade 9 curricula from 85 countries, finding that 66% lacked references to sustainability, with limited mention of Indigenous knowledge. The study noted that efforts to incorporate Indigenous knowledge are underway in some Australian states, Bhutan, Chile, Georgia and the Republic of Korea (McKenzie & Benavot, 2024).
In addition, one of the key barriers to integrating Indigenous knowledge into curricula, teaching and learning is the lack of resources, both at the local and national levels, to support the implementation. According to a 2022 study, while teachers had a great deal of interest in integrating both kinds of knowledge into their pedagogical practice, the lack of resources and institutional support to do so effectively undermined their intentions, resulting in a lack of integration of either form of knowledge in the school curricula (Druker-Ibáñez & Cáceres-Jensen, 2022).
Promoting Cultural Diversity, Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment
Incorporating Indigenous knowledge into ESD has benefits that move beyond the cognitive dimensions of education. It promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity among students and helps break down stereotypes to foster a greater appreciation for cultural diversity. This educational approach encourages students to recognize the value of different perspectives and to understand the importance of cultural heritage in shaping sustainable practices. Further, ESD acknowledges and values the contributions of Indigenous peoples cultivating a sense of pride and identity among Indigenous students. It also broadens the perspectives of non-Indigenous students, enriching their educational experience with diverse world views and ways of knowing. Such an educational approach prepares students to become global citizens who appreciate and respect cultural diversity and are equipped to engage with complex global issues (Kohl & Hopkins, 2020). Moreover, involving community members as educators or collaborators in this process can foster intergenerational knowledge transfer, ensuring that valuable cultural practices and wisdom are passed down.
In addition to enhancing sustainability and cultural diversity, contextualizing education with Indigenous knowledge supports community empowerment. It enables communities to take an active role in shaping their educational systems, ensuring that the education provided is relevant to their needs and aspirations. This participatory approach can lead to improved educational outcomes, as students are more likely to engage with and benefit from an education that is aligned with their cultural context and community goals. It also strengthens community bonds and fosters a collective responsibility towards education and sustainable development (da Silva et al., 2023; Druker-Ibáñez & Cáceres-Jensen, 2022).
In Peru, the Kusi Kawsay Andean School (‘Happy life’ in Quechua), a winner of the 2019 UNESCO Japan prize on ESD, is preserving Indigenous ancestral knowledge by offering learning opportunities to children through their Andean Legacy Programme. The Programme uses Indigenous music, dance, weaving, art and gatherings to not only preserve the Andean culture and traditions but also bring their communities together and empower their cultural identity. The school uses experiential learning with hands-on activities to reflect upon and take actions on global challenges such as gender equality and climate change.
Kusi Kawsay’s curriculum integrates ancestral Andean knowledge and uses songs, music and stories in Quechua The intercultural education is based on respect and reciprocity, the guiding values of Andean world view, while providing our students with the skills to navigate both modern and traditional worlds, thus, strengthening communities (Kusi Kawsay Association, 2024; UNESCO, 2021b).
For communities, particularly Indigenous ones, the integration of their knowledge systems into formal education can lead to greater cultural preservation and revitalization. It acknowledges and validates Indigenous knowledge, helping to combat the historical marginalization of these communities. This can strengthen community identity and pride, as the younger generation sees their cultural heritage recognized and respected within the broader educational framework.
Strengthening Environmental Stewardship
One of the key areas where Indigenous knowledge has been significantly undervalued is environmental stewardship. 2 Indigenous communities possess a wealth of traditional ecological knowledge and have managed their lands sustainably for millennia, employing practices that promote biodiversity and ecological balance. This knowledge has been transmitted over generations through close interaction with their local environments and encompasses sustainable practices in agriculture, natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. UNESCO’s Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) initiative, established in 2002, informs and facilitates exchanges between Indigenous and local knowledge holders with science and environmental policy processes, international norms and standards, and the emergence of transdisciplinary knowledge cooperation (UNESCO, 2024b). By incorporating this knowledge into teaching and learning, students gain valuable lessons about sustainability, resilience and stewardship of the environment.
For example, the traditional agricultural techniques of the Maya, the controlled burns used by Australian Aboriginals and the fishery management practices of Pacific Northwest tribes all demonstrate profound ecological understanding. Despite the effectiveness of these practices, colonial settlers imposed their own land-use strategies, often leading to environmental degradation. There has been a growing recognition of the value of Indigenous ecological knowledge in addressing modern environmental challenges such as climate change and natural disasters (Inglis, 1993; UNDP, 2024).
Another project in the Philippines provides a powerful example of how communities are leveraging traditional Indigenous knowledge for environmental protection. Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in 2013, causing significant damage to mangrove forests and devastating the local fishing economy. A project coordinated by academics at the Philippine Normal University supported the reforestation of mangroves in the wake of this destruction by leveraging traditional knowledge of the fishers in the region. Through this community effort, the damaged coastline soon returned to a flourishing 10-hectare mangrove forest which serves as a natural buffer against winds and storm surges. At the same time, the forest became a stable source of food and livelihood for the community. Following the initial success of preserving and expanding the mangrove plantation, the researchers began the process of connecting the lessons from this Indigenous knowledge to educating students in the local schools. They helped to create literacy materials written in Hiligaynon, the language of the area. The literacy materials contained Indigenous knowledge about the sea and its species drawn from the personal experiences and oral tradition of the fisherfolk community. This community mobilization initiative was dubbed ‘Katunggan Damo Kita Mahibaluan’, which means ‘In the mangroves, we can learn many things’ (UNESCO, 2021a).
Through contextualizing education with Indigenous knowledge, traditions and activities, students gain a deeper connection to and understanding of sustainable living practices rooted in their communities and culture, which often emphasize harmony with the environment, resource stewardship and community well-being. This enriched educational experience can lead to greater environmental consciousness and inspire students to become proactive in advocating for and implementing sustainable practices in their own lives and communities.
Conclusions: Gains for Education—Quality, Relevant Learning for All
The educational gains through the integration of Indigenous knowledge are substantial. Students gain a richer, more comprehensive education that goes beyond conventional scientific and technical knowledge. They learn to appreciate the wisdom embedded in Indigenous practices, which often emphasize balance and respect for nature. A systemic review of literature on Integration of indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) into sustainability education concluded that
studies reporting the experiences of integrating ILK into sustainability education within western educational institutions showed positive outcomes for students and educative communities, including improvements in students’ perceptions of their own identities and their valuations of the ILK relevant to their communities as well as of western scientific knowledge thought in school. (Druker-Ibáñez & Cáceres-Jensen, 2022).
Additionally, it cultivates critical thinking and adaptability, as students learn to navigate and integrate multiple knowledge systems. This helps learners be prepared to deal with multiple challenges in the real world, including those climate and environmental emergencies, social disruption due to migration, globalization and uncertainty in the economic and labour markets. Teaching learners’ so-called transversal competencies, twenty-first century skills, in locally relevant and culturally aligned contexts, means that all learners can thrive (Kohl & Hopkins, 2020).
Integrating Indigenous knowledge into education fosters innovation and interdisciplinary learning. Indigenous knowledge systems are inherently interdisciplinary, combining insights from various fields such as ecology, medicine and astronomy. This holistic approach can inspire innovative solutions to contemporary challenges by blending traditional wisdom with modern scientific methods. In essence, incorporating Indigenous knowledge in ESD equips students with the cultural competence and interdisciplinary skills necessary to address complex global issues, fostering a generation of informed and responsible global citizens.
Many gaps in ESD can be traced to a lack of contextualized and localized approaches, practices and materials. Tailoring educational content and methods to reflect the cultural and environmental contexts of learners, particularly by integrating Indigenous knowledge and language, creates more engaging and meaningful learning experiences. This contextualization and inclusion of traditional knowledge in turn not only strengthens cultural identity, heritage, community empowerment and self-determination, but also engagement in education and learning outcomes.
