Abstract

All organizations, if they want to continue their mission and vision, must be sustainable. The Transcultural Nursing Society, established in 1975 by Dr. Madeleine Leininger, is no exception. Our Mission is to enhance the quality of culturally congruent, competent, and equitable care that results in improved health and well-being for people worldwide. Our Vision is to provide nurses and other health care professionals with the knowledge base necessary to ensure cultural competence in practice, education, research, and administration. Great works, following our mission and vision, have been accomplished in the past 42 years, and we will continue for generations to come. We need to have a strong financial base for that vision to be a reality. In addition to the goals of advancing cultural competence and scholarship as well as advocating for social change, we are called to promote a sound financial nonprofit corporation.
The Board of Trustees’ responsibility is to ensure we are attentive to our financial well-being. As with any organization, we must look to our future to assure long-term sustainability. It is a balance that requires attention to the details and to plan for those unforeseen “bumps in the road.”
I was told recently that if a nonprofit wants to be sustainable, it can take up to one million dollars in reserves. We are working toward that goal! We are a great resource. We can provide the knowledge and the skills/tools to promote culturally competent care to other health professionals and organizations. Perhaps investing resources to develop online CEU classes through our website. Additionally marketing webinars and seminars to health care organizations to assist them in meeting the cultural competency requirements of The Joint Commission and Magnet Recognition. What are the other options? Contact us at staff@tcns.org with your innovative ideas and suggestions.
We look forward to hearing from you!
