Abstract

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) continues to recognize and appreciate the complexity and contributions of school nurses. Unlike our previous statement, however, the revised policy statement focuses on the daily contributions of school nurses to serve all students, not just those with special health care needs. This statement highlights the importance of the school nurse as a partner in providing comprehensive health services to all children and youth. As complex trends converge to create multifaceted child and adolescent health issues, the move to open schools for more children and youth with complex chronic conditions produces significant numbers of children who lack access to regular health care. School nurses are the health care representatives in schools assisting pediatricians in providing care for children. As pediatricians contend with the fluid practice model of their own specialty, they face a challenge in addressing child health within the many environments in which children and adolescents live, learn, and play. Effective partners can make the new health care model work. School nurses have been and continue to be such partners. The revised statement seeks to help pediatricians better understand the role of the school nurse in addressing child heath and the ways we can work together to improve the health of children.
The AAP recognizes and appreciates the daily work of school nurses. As our specialties evolve, we aim for universal access to care, an integrated health care model, improved education and health services, and a strong, supportive coordinated school health program. This will be the road to lifelong health and well-being for America’s school children.
