Abstract
Teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) often struggle with simultaneously meeting students’ writing and behavioral needs. Building on existing Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) literature, this study investigated the collateral effects of SRSD with social skills prompts on the writing outcomes and problem behavior of students with EBD. In a multiple probe across participants design study, we taught three upper elementary students with EBD opinion writing using the SRSD instructional framework. Outcome measures included the number of genre elements in participants’ written products, the length (i.e., total words written) and quality of written products, and the level of problem behaviors during 20-min observational sessions. Generalization measure involved the use of video prompts to determine the effects of SRSD on students’ overall writing outcomes. Post-SRSD data showed clear increases in the number of genre elements and length of written products for all participants. Additional holistic scoring revealed moderate improvements in the overall quality of written products across participants. Results on students’ problem behavior reduction were inconclusive. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) often struggle with addressing both academic and social/behavioral needs of students using evidence-based practices (Ennis & Katsiyannis, 2017; McKenna et al., 2020), particularly in the self-contained classroom (State et al., 2019). This difficulty in providing quality instruction further sets precedence for dismal progress of students with EBD both academically and behaviorally (DeVries et al., 2018; Robertson, 2020). Students with EBD in self-contained classrooms benefit when teaching strategies simultaneously address their academic and behavioral needs (Cuenca-Carlino & Mustian, 2013; Sanders et al., 2018). This is because, both serve as risk factors for school failure, regardless of which is the original dominant factor or if they appear simultaneously (Walker et al., 2004). For example, students who repeatedly experience failure academically could be prone to violent and socially unacceptable behavior (Miles & Stipek, 2006). Conversely, students’ social behaviors are likely to improve once they start to experience academic success (King et al., 2019).
Instructional practices that involve high rates of student responding combined with positive student–teacher interactions not only promote student engagement and reduce classroom problem behavior, but also increase academic learning of students (Heward & Wood, 2015). Examples of these instructional practices include in-creased opportunities to respond, corrective feedback, formative assessment, contingent-specific practice, and differential reinforcement (MacSuga-Gage & Gage, 2015). With a well-documented evidence base supporting its effectiveness, and its incorporation of the preceding practices, the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD; Graham & Harris, 1992) has the potential to address both the academic and social/behavioral needs of students with EBD.
Self-Regulated Strategy Development is a scientifically validated strategy that combines effective writing instructional strategies with self-regulation skills (i.e., goal setting, self-instruction, self-monitoring, and positive self-talk) to help students become effective and competent writers (Graham & Harris, 1992; Mastropieri et al., 2015). The goal of SRSD is to equip students with strategies they need to be successful at writing, while providing them with supports that promote engagement and motivation. The core of this approach is the consideration of each learner’s specific needs. The SRSD approach consists of explicit teaching of general and specific writing strategies (e.g., using the right vocabulary, being mindful of one’s audience, creating interesting introductions and conclusions), the knowledge required to use the strategies, ways to manage the strategies, the writing process, and one’s behavior as a writer (Swanson et al., 2014). Students receive instruction in six instructional stages (i.e., develop background knowledge, discuss it, model it, memorize it, support it, and independent practice) that are recursive in nature; the instructional stages can be re-arranged, re-combined, revisited, modified, or even omitted, depending on student’s needs (Harris et al., 2008).
Self-Regulated Strategy Development has been specifically found to be effective in improving academic outcomes (Losinski et al., 2014; Popham et al., 2018), academic engagement (Ennis et al., 2015; Lane et al., 2011), self-efficacy (Adkins & Gavins, 2012), and motivation (Sanders et al., 2023) of students with EBD and has been established as an evidence-based practice for use with students with EBD (Ennis, 2016; Ennis & Jolivette, 2014; Sreckovic et al., 2014). Several researchers also have investigated ways in which SRSD can be combined with other research-based interventions to improve the overall school outcomes for students, including those with EBD (Ennis, 2015). Examples include SRSD and video-self monitoring (Miller & Little, 2018) and SRSD and universal design for learning (UDL; Hashey et al., 2020). However, several gaps in the SRSD research for students with EBD still exist. Ennis et al. (2014) highlight some of these gaps in terms of using strategies for increasing students’ academic engagement, addressing behavioral and academic needs, and increasing teacher buy-in. Ennis and Jolivette (2014) reiterated some of the same gaps and suggested that future studies examine student social behaviors and engagement as a dependent variable. Moreover, previous SRSD research offers inconsistent results regarding its impact on student engagement and problem behaviors (e.g., Lane et al., 2011).
There is a need to investigate ways to bolster student engagement during writing and to explore ways to best meet both academic and behavioral needs of students with EBD. Having students write about social behavior using social skills prompts and using video prompts in place of written prompts offer two possible alternatives. The rationale for engaging students in writing about social behavior is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TBP; Ajzen, 1985, 1991). Ajzen’s (1985) TBP posits that human behavior is guided by (a) beliefs about the likely consequences of the behavior (behavioral beliefs), (b) beliefs about the normative expectations of others (normative beliefs), and (c) beliefs about the presence of factors that may facilitate or impede performance of the behavior (control beliefs). Behavioral beliefs produce a favorable or unfavorable attitude toward the behavior; normative beliefs result in perceived social pressure or subjective norm; and control beliefs give rise to perceived behavioral control or self-efficacy. Thus, more favorable the attitude and subjective norm and the greater the perceived control is, the stronger a person’s intention is to perform the behavior (Ajzen, 1985, 1991). Studies addressing TBP have shown that perceived control is a predictor of aggression among youth (Alimoradi et al., 2022). Using TPB as a guide, Shapiro and Watson (2000) also argued that educators can teach problem-solving by increasing students’ intention and perceived behavioral control to use problem-solving behaviors. Hence, writing and pondering relevant classroom behaviors may allow students to examine behavioral and normative beliefs, which can contribute to their perceived behavioral control (Ajzen & Kruglanski, 2019). To date, there are no known SRSD studies that have used social skills prompts.
Furthermore, using video prompts for students’ writing may be beneficial. Although research specific to the use of video prompts for writing is unknown, when viewed in the context of UDL (specifically related to its principles of multiple means of engagement and representation; CAST, 2018) the use of video prompts has the potential to increase learning outcomes for students. Specifically, providing individual choice and autonomy in tasks, such as written versus video prompts, as well as providing tasks and activities that are relevant, valuable, and authentic have been found to help learners including those with EBD develop self-determination, pride in accomplishment, and increase the degree to which they feel connected to their learning (Cosden et al., 1995; Schuh & Farrell, 2006). For example, Berk (2009) describes several benefits of using videos in the classroom, including grabbing students’ attention, generating students’ interest, motivating students, and making learning fun, among others. Furthermore, Donkor (2010) found that youth and young adults using video-based instructional materials (UDL’s principle of representation) had higher practical skills than those using print-based materials.
To address the need for bolstering student engagement during writing and maximizing both academic and social skill learning of students, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of writing about social behavior using SRSD with social skills prompts (in both written and video formats) on the opinion writing skills and problem behaviors of students with EBD. We sought to answer the following research question: What are the effects of SRSD with social skills prompts on (a) the number of genre elements of the written products, (b) the length of written products, (c) the quality of written products, and (d) the problem behaviors of students with EBD in self-contained classrooms?
Method
Participants
Three Black male students from two specialized behavior support (SBS) classrooms for students with EBD participated in the study. Students met the following inclusion criteria (a) were in grades 3–5; (b) had an individualized education program (IEP) with at least one social skills/behavioral goal; (c) could write a complete sentence independently; and (d) read on a first grade level or higher. We used Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM; Shinn, 1989) for reading and writing to determine students’ eligibility for criteria (c) and (d) above. We administered oral reading fluency measures and used grade level standards to determine students’ reading level and used total words written (TWW) to determine students’ writing abilities. For eligibility screening (i.e., prebaseline), we used reading probes from EasyCBM (Anderson et al., 2014) and writing prompts from Harris et al. (2008).
Rashad was a 10-year-old fourth-grade student receiving special education services under the other health impairment (OHI) eligibility. He had a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) and had a behavior intervention plan (BIP) addressing compliance to directions, accepting responsibility, and completing assigned tasks promptly. Student behavior documentation indicated that he was easily frustrated with tasks and would often express this through storming off and engaging in destructive behaviors (e.g., flipping chairs and desks over, ripping up papers, pushing and shoving others). The average prebaseline CBM reading score for Rashad was 165 words per minute, which placed him above third-grade reading level.
Cory was 10 years old in the fifth grade, who received special education services under the OHI eligibility. He had a medical diagnosis of ADHD and ODD and took medications for his ADHD diagnosis. Cory’s IEP goals addressed asking for assistance and/or getting teacher’s attention appropriately, using appropriate language when frustrated, and avoiding aggressive physical contact during a conflict. Cory’s teacher stated that Cory engaged in inappropriate attention-seeking behaviors such as pouting, refusing to complete assignments, and verbally attacking other students who received attention from the teacher. The average prebaseline CBM reading score for Cory was 145 words per minute, placing him above third-grade reading level.
Kasim was a 10-year-old fourth-grade student receiving special education services under the Emotional Disturbance eligibility with diagnoses of ADHD, ADD, and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. Kasim’s IEP goals addressed coping skills in frustrating situations, avoiding physical and verbal aggression, taking responsibility for his actions, complying with adults’ requests, and managing his time well during small group and independent activities. He had a BIP addressing these issues. Kasim’s teacher stated that he often engaged in bullying behavior toward peers and instigating other students by calling them names. His physical aggression escalated when he perceived himself to be in trouble and when he was asked to go to an isolated spot to “cool down.” The average prebaseline CBM reading score for Kasim was 161 words per minute, which placed him above third-grade reading level.
Setting and Interventionist
The study took place in a Title 1 K–5 school, serving 717 students, in a suburban area in a southeastern state. The ethnicity breakdown within the school was 53% Black, 31% Hispanic, 8% Asian, and 6% White; 98% of students received free or reduced-price lunch and 10% of students received special education services. The school had an established school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports system, with schoolwide contingencies to reinforce behavioral expectations. Teachers of both SBS classrooms used the Boys Town Educational Model (BTEM; Fluke et al., 2013) for behavior management. For literacy instruction, the teachers followed the Balanced Literacy (Lynch, 2018) framework, a prescribed district-wide reading program. Classroom observations occurred during the writing block of instruction in both classrooms. The first author served as the primary data collector and interventionist, and all SRSD intervention sessions and assessments took place outside the students’ classroom in a designated room within the school.
Dependent Variables and Measurement
There were four dependent variables, including (a) number of genre elements included in students’ written responses, (b) length of written responses, (c) quality of written responses, and (d) problem behavior. The score of genre elements served as the primary dependent variable.
We used scripted instructions during writing assessment sessions to ensure uniformity; participants were instructed to take a position regarding a behavior or action from the writing prompt. They also were informed that they would not receive help during the planning and writing of the essay, but they would receive help with spelling if they requested for it. During baseline assessment, participants were instructed to try their best to respond to the writing prompts. During post-intervention assessment, participants were reminded to use strategies learned and to create a graphic organizer to assist them in planning for the writing. The first author read all written prompts to each participant and repeated a prompt at participant’s request. Instructions to participants for video prompts were the same as those for written prompts, except for the “read aloud” portion. Although not timed, participants wrote for an average of 2–3 min per prompt during baseline and wrote for at least 15 min with some participants taking up to 45 min to complete their responses during post-intervention and maintenance conditions.
Genre Elements
We scored participants’ written products using a genre elements rubric. The components of the rubric were as follows: (a) a topic sentence/statement identifying a behavior/action (0–2 points); (b) two reasons for choosing the behavior/action (0–4 points); (c) two consequences that might result from the behavior/action (0–4 points); (d) two alternative behaviors/actions (0–4 points); (e) a conclusive statement reiterating why behavior/action was chosen (0–2 points); (f) number of transition words (range 0–5 points); and (g) number of social skills vocabulary used (range 0–4 points). Each participant could earn up to 25 points per written product (see Appendix A for the rubric in the supplemental materials).
Length of Written Responses
We measured participants’ length of written responses using TWW. To eliminate scorer bias, the first author typed each participant’s response and corrected spelling errors before scoring based on suggestions from prior research (i.e., Mason & Shriner, 2008).
Quality of Written Responses
We recruited and trained two scorers not associated with the study to assess participants’ quality of written products using the North Carolina’s Focused Holistic Score Scale for persuasive essays (see Glencoe Language Arts, n.d. in the supplemental materials). The score range was 1–4 with 1 being unsatisfactory, 2 being uneven, 3 being sufficient, and 4 being skillful. The first scorer was a literacy resource teacher with 25 years working with students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The second scorer was a literacy coach with over 30 years in K–5 literacy instruction.
Problem Behavior
We defined problem behavior as any observable actions that were counter to the expected classroom behaviors related to the specific activity occurring at the time of observation. These included but were not limited to (a) failing to respond to teacher directives, (b) delaying getting started on an assigned task within 10 s of being instructed to do so or working on tasks other than those assigned by the teacher, (c) holding conversations with others that were unrelated to tasks at hand, and (e) disrupting the teacher with questions or statements unrelated to topic or discussions at hand. The first author and a trained rater conducted all observations in participants’ respective classrooms during the writing block of instruction each day the writing assessment occurred. Using partial interval recording, we documented the presence of the target behavior following a 10-s observe and 5-s record time interval using a simple interval timer (SIT) app on an iPhone. Observers recorded a check mark each time the participant was observed engaging in the target problem behavior any time during each 10-s interval. Each observational session lasted for 20 min for a total of 80 intervals. We divided the total number of intervals during which a participant was observed engaging in the target problem behavior by 80 and multiplied by 100 to yield a percentage.
Interrater Agreement
Two doctoral students served as interraters. For the genre elements score, we calculated the interrater agreement (IRA) using the item-by-item comparison method by dividing the number of agreed items by total number of items and multiplying by 100. For length of written responses, we calculated IRA using the gross method (i.e., smaller number by the larger number and multiplied by 100) by comparing the TWW data obtained from two scorers. For quality of written responses, the first author randomly selected a total of six writing samples (three from baseline and three from post-intervention) per participant for the two raters to score. IRA was calculated using the percent agreement method. To collect IRA data for the problem behavior, two raters observed each participant at the same time using split headphones to listen to the same audio prompt produced by the SIT app on the iPhone. We calculated IRA for problem behavior using the interval-by-interval comparison by dividing the number of agreements by the total number of agreements plus disagreements and multiplying by 100.
For participants’ genre elements and length of written responses, an interrater scored an average of 74% (56–100%) of participants’ written responses across conditions with the overall mean IRA being 99.7% (99–100%). For writing quality, the overall mean IRA was 99.4% (98.8–100%). We collected IRA data for participants’ problem behavior for an average of 42.8% (25–75%) across conditions and participants and the overall mean IRA was 98.1% (94–100%).
Materials
Written Social Skills Prompts
The first author developed the written prompts based on social situations described in “Don’t Get Mad: Anger Alternatives Game” (Guidance Group, 2011). The game was designed to teach emotional intelligence in small group counseling sessions and typically involved one to five players. There were 99 scenarios provided in the original game. The first author selected 57 scenarios that depicted school or classroom situations and modified them to reflect typical classroom situations. She then added three of her own prompts for a total of 60 prompts. Each prompt consisted of (a) three sentences describing a specific scenario in a school/classroom environment that involved at least one student caught in a situation that is likely to evoke an inappropriate reaction or response on the student’s part and (b) a question at the end (e.g., “It is time for recess, and Mrs. Britt asks everyone to line up quietly. David comes from behind the line and cuts the line, while pushing another student. Mrs. Britt asks David to go to the back of the line, but David shakes his head and starts arguing with Mrs. Britt. What would you tell David?”). The Lexile score range across all prompts was 300–950 with equivalency to grades 2–4, which suggested the prompts were within the participants’ reading level. To ensure the prompts addressed typical behaviors of students in the K–5 environment, a program specialist of elementary special education programs at a local school district rated 30% of randomly selected prompts. Using a yes/no rating scale, the rater determined if each prompt (a) included typical social situations and student behaviors within the school environment and (b) was appropriate for participants’ age/grade and reading level. All prompts received a rating of “yes” for both items.
Video Prompts
We used four video prompts for generalization measure (i.e., two at baseline, one post-intervention, and one during maintenance). All videos were retrieved from McIntyre’s (2016) YouTube channel and were originally created and used for classroom management professional development at Michigan State University in the 1970s. Although the videos were prepared a little over 40 years ago, the student behaviors and teacher actions are still relevant and very similar to current student behaviors and classroom interactions. A typical video prompt was between 40 s and 2 min in length and included at least one student involved in a situation that would most likely cause or elevate negative responses/actions on the part of the student.
SRSD Instructional Materials
Each participant received a binder with the following materials: (a) POW-TREE-e chart; (b) POW-TREE-e graphic organizer (Mastropieri & Scruggs, 2014); (c) transition words chart; (d) anchor essays; (e) graphing paper; (f) a list of self-instruction/self-talk phrases (Harris et al., 2008); (g) a chart of selected social skills vocabulary; (h) essay response paper; and (i) opinion writing mnemonic (Harris et al., 2008) with counterarguments (Mason et al., 2010). We made modifications to the original POW-TREE and presented POW-
Procedural Fidelity
Teacher Instructional Practices in Writing
We determined the extent to which the participants’ teachers engaged in writing instruction by asking both teachers to complete the Teacher Survey of Classroom Writing Practices (Cutler & Graham, 2008). Results from the survey depicted overall frequent and consistent engagement in writing activities for both teachers. However, observations from a 40-min English/Language Arts (ELA) writing block in both teachers’ classrooms showed there were no instructional activities that are considered part of teaching the writing process. Students were only observed working on independent writing as part of an assignment. Furthermore, none of the writing activities observed were synonymous with those found within the SRSD framework. Both teachers either provided individual support or conferencing with students during writing.
SRSD Implementation Fidelity
We videotaped all intervention sessions for implementation fidelity checks. A trained doctoral student scored between 30–50% of randomly selected intervention sessions for each participant using a yes/no checklist with 12 items for each SRSD lesson to determine the degree to which the intervention procedural steps were followed. We calculated the implementation fidelity by dividing the number of steps performed correctly by the total number of applicable steps and multiplying the quotient by 100. A second trained doctoral student also randomly reviewed 30% the videotaped sessions scored for implementation fidelity to collect IRA for implementation fidelity data. The overall implementation fidelity across instructional sessions was 98.9% (98–100%) with IRA being 99.7% (99.3–100%).
Experimental Design and Procedures
We used a single-case, multiple probe across participants design (Horner & Baer, 1978) and collected data across four experimental conditions (i.e., baseline, post-intervention, maintenance, and choice). We used participants’ scores of genre elements (i.e., primary dependent variable) to make condition change decisions. There was a minimum of five baseline data points with three consecutive baseline sessions showing stability immediately prior to a participant receiving SRSD instruction. During SRSD instruction, writing data were collected, but for progress monitoring purposes only. There was a minimum of five post-SRSD data points. To ensure unbiased access to written prompts and to foster engagement throughout the study, participants were allowed to randomly pull three prompt cards from an envelope, read all the prompts, and select one they preferred during each assessment. Generalization was embedded within each condition and involved the use of video prompts instead of written prompts.
Baseline
During baseline, participants received all instruction in their SBS classroom from their special education teacher. For literacy instruction, the classroom teachers followed the Balanced Literacy Framework (Lynch, 2018). Typically, balanced literacy consists of read alouds, shared reading, reading mini lessons that involve direct and explicit instruction, independent reading, conferencing (whereby the teacher meets with students individually to discuss goals, strengths, and areas of need), small group work for guided reading and strategy instruction, and assessments (Lynch, 2018). Based on prebaseline classroom observations during the writing block of instruction and teacher-completed Teacher Survey of Classroom Writing Practices (Cutler & Graham, 2008), both teachers did not regularly provide explicit writing instruction; rather, writing activities involved incidental teaching and correction as needed during class activities that involved writing.
SRSD Instruction
The first author delivered all instruction by following the SRSD lessons for persuasive writing developed by Harris et al. (2008). Instruction included the six recursive instructional stages: (a) developing skills and background knowledge; (b) discussing it; (c) modeling it; (d) memorizing it; (e) supporting it (i.e., providing guided practice); and (f) independent practice (Harris et al., 2003). For our study, we combined the first two stages because both serve the broader purpose of orienting the learner to the concept of writing as a skill and SRSD as a framework that would help the learner achieve proficiency in the skill (Graham & Harris, 2017). Each participant received a total of five lessons on opinion writing provided in 30- to 45-min sessions. Lessons were repeated as needed, and movement from one lesson to the next was determined by the participant scoring at least 20 out of 25 total points. Baseline prompts were used for instruction and practice; the participant selected a different baseline for practice for each lesson. SRSD instruction lasted 12 sessions for Rashad, 18 for Cory, and 14 for Kasim.
Lesson 1: Develop Background Knowledge/Discuss It
Lesson 1 combined the first two stages of SRSD. The activities for Lesson 1 included (a) discussion of habits for successful writing (i.e., self-regulation, self-talk, goal setting, coping, self-evaluation), (b) introduction to POW-TREE-e strategy and mnemonic chart for opinion writing, (c) introduction to transition words, and (d) introduction to social skills/behavior vocabulary. The first author used an anchor opinion response to illustrate the POW-TREE-e parts, transition words, and social skills vocabulary usage in a written response. The first author and the participant reviewed a prompt that corresponded to the anchor essay, and then read the anchor essay together, identifying the TREE-e parts, transition words, and social skills vocabulary. Next, the first author and the participant charted the number of parts included in the anchor essay, and counted the transition and social skills vocabulary words. The participant then reviewed his baseline responses and charted the number of parts included. Finally, the participant set a goal for the next session. Steps in Lesson 1 were repeated as needed until mastery; Lesson 1 lasted for two to three sessions.
Lesson 2: Model It
Lesson 2 aimed to provide participants with a visual demonstration of how to use SRSD steps to complete an opinion essay. The steps in lesson 2 included (a) reviewing the POW-TREE-e mnemonic aid, (b) reviewing the self-instructions selected by the participant, (c) selecting and reading aloud a baseline prompt, (d) modeling how to plan using the graphic organizer, and (d) writing a complete essay. The first author completed these steps while thinking out aloud and using self-instructions and positive statements, with help from the participant. The participant then graphed the number of response parts in the revision with the first author’s help. The first author gave specific praise for participants’ input during the writing process. To end the lesson, the first author reviewed the POW-TREE-e and the other essential components of the SRSD procedure. Participants completed Lesson 2 in one to two sessions.
Lesson 3: Memorize It
Lesson 3 focused on supporting memorization and mastery of the mnemonic aid and other essential components (i.e., transition words, social skills vocabulary, self-instruction). The lesson began with POW-TREE-e review and memorization. Next, the first author gave the participant a blank graphic organizer, the transition word list, the self-instruction sheet, and a prompt response paper. Then, the participant chose one baseline prompt that was not previously selected for writing practice. Together, the participant and the first author read the prompt and brainstormed ideas to respond to the prompt. The first author encouraged the participant to use self-instruction sheets as needed. At the end of the writing task, the participant charted and graphed the number of parts included in his essay. The first author and the participant then discussed improvements in the written response, and the participant set a goal for the next lesson. Participants completed Lesson 3 in three to five sessions.
Lesson 4: Support It
Lesson 4 focused on teaching independence in applying the SRSD with scaffolds and support materials being gradually removed. The first author reviewed all SRSD steps in Lessons 1–3. Then, the participant selected a baseline prompt that was not previously selected and worked on it without supporting materials. The first author encouraged the participant to write down his own strategy notes and remember the transition words and personal self-instructions while planning and composing the essay. The participant also graphed the number of parts included in the essay. In Lesson 4, the first author only provided verbal support as needed and verbal praise for completed steps. Finally, the participant set a goal for the next session. Participants repeated Lesson 4 as needed and completed it in two to four sessions.
Lesson 5: Independent Practice/Mastery
Lesson 5 aimed to ensure fluency in the use of SRSD procedures to develop complete opinion essays. The participant engaged in the entire SRSD process for opinion writing with minimal prompting from the first author, who offered support to the participant as requested. Participants practiced writing a response and graphing the results. Participants repeated Lesson 5 as needed and completed it in three to four sessions. For Rashad and Cory, the first author had to return to previous lessons to reteach and refresh some strategies and skills. A participant met mastery when he scored at least 20 out of 25 points based on the rubric score in three consecutive written responses during independent practice, at which point, the participant entered the post-intervention condition.
Post-Intervention
Following the completion of the SRSD instruction, each participant responded to five written prompts and one video prompt (for generalization) with one prompt per day. Administration of prompts remained the same as it was in baseline.
Maintenance
The maintenance phase began 1 week after the last post-intervention data collection for each participant. Administration of prompts remained the same as it was in baseline.
Choice
Based on existing evidence on the benefits of providing students with EBD some control over choice of tasks (Cosden et al., 1995; Jolivette et al., 2001), we offered the choice phase. Participants were to choose between a written prompt and a video prompt to determine if a preference existed. Owing to time constraints (end of school year), only one participant (Rashad) entered the choice phase, Administration of prompts remained the same as it was in baseline.
Social Validity
We collected social validity data from participants and their teachers before and after the intervention to measure acceptability of SRSD and to gauge changing perceptions regarding the intervention and student behavior. The teachers completed an adapted version of the Intervention Rating Profile-15 (IRP-15; Witt & Elliott, 1985) pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. Both questionnaires consisted of 15 items rated on a 6-point Likert-type scale (i.e., strongly disagree, disagree, slightly disagree, slightly agree, agree, strongly agree). These items assessed teachers’ perceptions regarding the writing performance of the participants, and the effects and benefits of the SRSD intervention for improving students’ writing skills and/or social behaviors. The participants’ pre-intervention questionnaire consisted of seven items and the post-intervention questionnaire consisted of 12 items, all on 6-point Likert-type scale (i.e., strongly disagree, disagree, slightly disagree, slightly agree, agree, strongly agree) with an option for comments. Items included on participants’ questionnaires assessed their attitudes toward writing, perspectives regarding their behaviors, and perspectives regarding the impact of writing about behavior on their own social behaviors and writing skills.
Results
Owing to time constraints, only one participant (Rashad) completed all four phases of the study; Cory completed three phases whereas Kasim completed only two phases. In addition, there was an interruption on the intervention data collection due to schoolwide end-of-year activities, which resulted in participants completing some of written assessments in a different room, and behavior observations being conducted in the afternoon on a few occasions due to schoolwide testing schedules.
Genre Elements in Written Responses
All participants’ performance in genre elements based on the rubric scores showed low and stable level during baseline with a mean score of 1.9 (range 1–2) for Rashad, 3 (range 2–4) for Cory, and 4 (range 3–6) for Kasim. During post-intervention, all participants showed substantial improvement in level by 68% with a mean score of 18 (range 17–20) for Rashad, 20 (range 16–21) for Cory, and 22 (range 16–23) for Kasim and with an overall high level of stability (except for an outlier for Cory and an outlier for Kasim). During the maintenance condition, Rashad and Cory both showed slight reduction in rubric score from that during post-intervention but remained markedly higher than baseline scores. Rashad’s choice was a video prompt with a score of 16. Both Rashad (during choice) and Cory (during maintenance) also completed one in-class session of teacher-administered writing assessment, and their genre element scores were slightly below their other scores during the same condition. Visual analysis of baseline and post-intervention data shows there were clear, but delayed, effects of SRSD on all three participants’ inclusion of genre elements (see Figure 1). Generalization data from video prompts were consistent with the data pattern from the written prompts across conditions.

Length of Written Responses
All participants substantially increased TWW from baseline to post-intervention, and this trend continued to the maintenance condition for Rashad and Cory (see Figure 2). Visual analysis of baseline data revealed stable and consistently low scores in terms of TWW across participants with a mean of 7 (range 5–11) for Rashad, 16 (range 13–21) for Cory, and 18 (11–31) for Kasim. Post-intervention data showed an immediate increase in TWW with stability and no overlapping data points between baseline and post-intervention. During maintenance, Rashad showed a slight decreased level in both TWW compared to his performance during post-intervention and Cory maintained his TWW from the post-intervention condition. The in-class assessment data for Rashad (during choice) and Cory (during maintenance) showed similar or slightly above other data points in the same condition. Generalization data for TWW from video prompts were mostly consistent with the data pattern from the written prompts across conditions for all participants.

Quality of Written Responses
Results from the holistic scoring revealed moderate improvements in the quality of written products post-intervention across participants. Two scorers separately scored six randomly selected written responses per participant (three from baseline and three from post-intervention). The mean score for baseline responses was 1.1 (unsatisfactory) while the mean score for post-intervention responses was 2.3 (uneven). Specifically, baseline mean scores for Rashad, Cory, and Kasim were 1, 1, and 1.2 while their post-intervention mean scores were 2, 2.4, and 2.5. A closer examination of individual responses offered some interesting insights regarding each participant’s perception of behavior as it relates to consequences. Overall, all participants were more elaborate and thoughtful in their responses post-intervention. For example, Kasim seemed to understand the consequences of certain behaviors but still thought the student(s) in the specific prompts were justified in acting the way they did. On the contrary, Rashad’s responses indicated that the main reason for not engaging in the target behaviors was to avoid being in trouble. In some if Cory’s responses, while he provided alternative behaviors, he would also include statements acknowledging the challenges in engaging in the (desirable alternative behavior(s)).
Problem Behavior
Baseline data depicted a wide range (low to high) of problem behavior occurrences across participants with a steep increasing trend for Rashad (mean 71.4%, range: 56.2–91.6%), a decreasing trend for Cory (mean 40.4%, range 21.0–72.5%), and an overall increasing trend for Kasim (mean 12.5%, range 0–37.5%). During post-intervention, all participants showed a decrease in the percentage of levels of problem behaviors with a mean of 28% (range 18.6–39.2%) for Rashad, 8.3% (range 0–17.5%) for Cory, and 5.7% (range 0–11.3%) for Kasim. During the maintenance condition, both Rashad (mean 16.7%, range 8.8–23.8%) and Cory (mean 0.4%, range 0–1.3%) maintained low levels of problem behavior. Although there were reductions in participants’ problem behavior from baseline to post-intervention, a functional relation did not exit due to Cory’s and Kasim’s baseline data patterns (see Figure 3).

Social Validity
Both teachers had an optimistic view of the potential effectiveness and appropriateness of SRSD for addressing students’ writing needs pre-intervention (with ratings of 5 [agreed] or 6 [strongly agreed]). They affirmed this view post-intervention with both stating that (a) the intervention was effective in remediating writing skills and had the potential to remediate behavioral issues, (b) SRSD could be feasibly used in their classrooms, and (c) they were willing to incorporate social skills prompt/training within their ELA/writing lesson plans.
Cory and Kasim agreed or strongly agreed that SRSD intervention helped improve their writing skills and that writing about behavior improved their classroom behavior. Rashad agreed that SRSD helped him improve his writing skills but did not improve his social behaviors. None of the students elaborated on their responses.
Discussion
This study aimed to investigate the effects of SRSD instruction in tandem with social skills prompts (written and video prompts) on students’ opinion writing skills and problem behaviors. Visual analysis of data revealed there were clear, but delayed, effects of SRSD on participants’ inclusion of opinion genre elements and the length of written products across participants at three points in time. Overall, after receiving the SRSD strategy for opinion writing, all participants included more opinion components in their responses. They also provided alternative behaviors/actions to the ones presented in the prompts and summarized their arguments at the end. The effects of SRSD on students’ problem behavior were inconclusive with only one participant (Rashad) demonstrating a clear reduction during post-intervention.
Results on writing skills from this study are consistent with previous SRSD research with students with EBD (Adkins & Gavins, 2012; Ennis et al., 2015; Ennis & Jolivette, 2014; Harris et al., 2012; Lane et al., 2011). However, none of the previous studies involved participants writing about social behavior. Working with students with EBD is challenging given the behavior problems they likely exhibit that often tend to increase when students are presented with tasks they view as difficult (Seidman, 2005). In this study, all participants initially viewed the tasks as difficult and they tended to revert to noncompliant behaviors as a defense mechanism. During post-intervention, all participants worked through the writing process by using goal setting, self-instruction, self-monitoring, and positive self-talk. In addition, participants wrote for 15–45 min during post-intervention, compared to writing for an average of 2–3 min per prompt during baseline. The self-regulatory elements of SRSD as well as providing participants with a choice (i.e., choosing from three written prompts, and video versus written in the choice phase for Rashad) might have helped to alter their impulsive reactions to the perceived taxing nature of the writing process.
As discussed previously, the premise of TPB (Ajzen, 1985) is that human behavior is guided by beliefs about the likely consequences of the behavior, normative expectations of others, and the extent to which an individual believes they have control over the behavior. Applied to SRSD, having students with EBD engage in opinion writing with social skills prompts provides them with an opportunity not only to think and reflect on authentic classroom scenarios, but also to problem solve through offering alternative solutions. This may potentially influence the students’ perception regarding specific behavioral consequences and what is expected of them prior to them encountering a conflict. This approach may hold collateral benefits for overall behavioral outcomes for students with EBD, as opposed to them reflecting on their own actions afterwards (Maag, 2005). Although we did not fully examine the choice phase, the influence of perceived autonomy over choice (Ajzen, 1985) within SRSD with social skills may also have been at play. Specifically, throughout the study, participants were able to choose an option from three written prompts, and this may have provided some level of motivation to engage in the writing tasks (Jolivette et al., 2001).
This study contributes to existing literature on SRSD with students with EBD by exploring practical ways to address student behavior while teaching them essential writing skills. The use of socials skill prompts addressed some of the lingering issues such as making writing tasks relevant (Ennis, 2015) and promoting social skills through writing (Ennis & Jolivette, 2014). The two teachers both alluded to the potential benefits of social skills prompts in addressing behavioral problems as well as teaching writing skills. Even though we did not establish a correlation between the intervention and student behavior, the results are important and offer a basis for future investigations as well as implications for practice.
Limitations and Directions for Future Research
There are several limitations in the study that warrant future investigations. First, the study was conducted toward the end of school year, resulting in (a) only one participant being exposed to all experimental conditions and (b) limited data collection on the participants’ problem behavior due to scheduling conflicts and testing. Future research is needed to investigate the full effects of SRSD with social skills prompts on both writing skills and problem behavior of students with EBD across all experimental conditions. Second, the first author served as the interventionist and primary data collector for participants’ problem behaviors. Over the course of the study, all three participants developed positive relationships with the first author. It is possible that some of the behavioral improvements noted post-intervention could be due to these relationships as well the first author’s presence in the classroom during observations. Future studies should explore data collection instruments that capture student behavior using naïve observers through unobtrusive observations. Third, most of the post-intervention and maintenance assessments were completed during the participants’ end-of-year school assessments. Having to participate in two assessments (one for school and one for the study) within the same day might have affected participants’ performance. Similarly, the location and times (morning vs. afternoon) for post-intervention writing assessments were inconsistent, which might have contributed to lower scores for some participants (e.g., Rashad and Cory were more focused and productive in the morning). It is essential for future research to control for possible confounding variables such as scheduling, locations, and time of assessment. Fourth, although the use of video prompts provided participants with an alternative to written prompts, which aligns with UDL’s principles of representation and engagement, we did not collect data evaluating the impact of video prompts versus written prompts on participants’ engagement or motivation. Furthermore, only one participant (Rashad) entered the choice phase for one session. Despite that he chose the video over written prompt, there was no data on the duration of engagement in writing or level of motivation. Future studies should investigate fully the impact of video versus written prompts through a comparative design and collecting social validity data specifically reflecting participants’ preferences on the use of video prompts. Finally, although common in SRSD studies, data collection during post-intervention prevented us from claiming immediate effects that support a clear functional relation. Specifically, the post-intervention data reflected the effects of SRSD instruction after 12–18 SRSD sessions; therefore, visual analysis of the data can only indicate delayed effects without an immediate, detectable change. Researchers in future studies may consider the addition of intermittent probes during SRSD instruction.
Implication for Practice
Findings of this study have important implications for practice. First, teachers working with students with EBD are often faced with the challenges of meeting both academic and behavioral needs of their students. SRSD instruction using social skills prompts has the potential to provide a solution for part of the dilemma by helping teachers simultaneously provide writing instruction and teach social skills. Both teachers stated anecdotally that they could see the value of such intervention in their daily instruction with students with EBD. Second, teaching students with EBD opinion writing using social skills prompts provides an opportunity for them to express their feelings and thoughts regarding actions and/or behaviors in which they tend to engage. This approach has the potential to offer insights on the students’ actual thinking processes regarding their classroom behavior. For example, from Kasim’s responses, it was clear that he understood the school rules well and had a good grasp of inappropriate behavior and consequences. Yet, he exhibited more problem behaviors than any other participants outside of the observations. Teachers could use this knowledge to investigate the cause and/or function of Kasim’s problem behavior, which was not due to a lack of understanding of the rules or consequences. On the contrary, judging from his responses, Rashad did not have a clear understanding of rules and consequences. For most of his responses, Rashad gave “getting in trouble” as the reason why the behavior/action depicted in the prompt was inappropriate. He then would give examples of getting in trouble (e.g., getting referral and being suspended). Based on Rashad’s responses, he would likely benefit from explicit instruction of socially acceptable behavior/actions with examples and non-examples, alongside reasons beyond getting in trouble. For students like Kasim and Rashad, using SRSD opinion writing with social skills prompts has the potential to help practitioners understand the root cause of persistent problem behaviors; this in turn could inform their decisions regarding interventions.
