Abstract

With interest I read the study of Wang et al.A on the vertical alignment of the metatarsal heads. We confirm his results that the thickness of the sole under the metatarsal heads decreased from the first to the fifth ray. In the loaded situation, we measured a similar thickness of the sole. In the unloaded situation, the sole under the metatarsal heads was thicker. Probably this difference is methodological. Wang measured the thickness of the sole while the subject was lying prone with the knee flexed at 90°. We measured the subjects in an upright standing position causing distention of the venous plexus of the sole of the (fore)foot. 2 Further details of our results will be published in a forthcoming issue of Foot and Ankle International.
