Abstract
The accuracy of spirometric testing of lung function can be impaired by several quality control problems of a psychological nature, including effort dependency, comprehension of instructions, motivation, technician effects, and practice effects. This study evaluates a computerized visual feedback display designed to reduce these quality control problems and thus lead to easier and more accurate spirometry. The results show that the display can produce as high or higher values than standard procedures and at the same time, reduce variability significantly. The display also permits less technician intervention, which makes testing easier and reduces technician effects.
