Abstract

This issue of PWMP is focused on sustainability issues in public administration, a topic of great timeliness and relevance to challenges confronting the infrastructure and public works communities. Guest Editor Deniz Leuenberger provides an overview in “Sustainability in Action” followed by four excellent contributions on various aspects of sustainability. The issue is rounded out with two additional articles. Majumdar and Lentz continue reporting on rural transportation issues in “Individuals’ Attitudes Toward Public Transit in a Rural Transit District.” Commuters in rural areas typically have fewer travel options than their urban counterparts, and this exploratory research is an attempt to determine what factors would influence a modal choice for rural commuters. In “Water Systems Meeting Everyday Life: A Conceptual Model of Household Use of Urban Water and Sanitation Systems,” Helena Krantz shows how the impacts of broad policy decisions are ultimately experienced at the local and household level. She presents a conceptual model that provides a framework for understanding the interconnectedness between the system and users and applies it to the example of phosphorus recycling in Sweden.
