Abstract

Each day seems to bring new opportunities to use technology to support our work in early intervention and early childhood special education. As mentioned in the 2012 National Association for the Education of Young Children position statement, “these tools have transformed how parents and families manage their daily lives and seek out entertainment, how teachers use materials in the classroom with young children and communicate with parents and families, and how we deliver teacher education and professional development.” 1 This column will be the first of two dedicated to sharing examples of applications (a.k.a. apps) and how to use them to support quality early learning opportunities.
Using iPads to Illustrate Problem-Solving Strategies
This video illustrates how preschool teacher Ashley Hamand creatively uses the iPad to enable children to illustrate problem-solving strategies from the Pyramid Model for one another.
Using the iPod Touch and iPhone to Record Video and Photographic Documentation
Three teachers discuss and illustrate how they use the iPhone and iPod Touch to capture, watch, and share video and photographs.
Pads, Pods, and Phones: Discovering Their Utility in Early Childhood
By Juliann Woods and Larry Edelman (2012)
Many early childhood providers are exploring the uses of mobile devices and related applications in their work with young children and families. The handout from this session at the 28th Annual International Conference on Young Children With Special Needs and Their Families describes options and devices for gathering documentation, intervention, instruction, assistive technology, and family support. This handout highlights resources that can be used by early intervention colleagues to support each young learner.
Using iPads to Enhance Preschool Speech and Language Services
This video describes and illustrates a number of ways that speech and language pathologists are using iPads to enhance their work with preschoolers.
