Abstract
Studies into the use of carbonized rubber seed shell as a filler in formulations for blends of natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized low molecular weight natural rubber (ELMWNR) prepared using the semi-efficient sulphur vulcanisation system were carried out. The rheological properties (cure rate, cure time, t90 and scorch time, t2), physico-mechanical properties, solvent resistance, solubility and swelling properties of the vulcanisates showed carbonized rubber seed shell behaving as a plasticizer/softener in the mix. From the properties investigated, replacement of carbon black with 15% carbonized rubber seed shell will not make any serious deleterious effect on the vulcanisate, also carbonized rubber seed shell can be used as a filler in products where softness is anticipated. Above all, the properties obtained from the carbonized rubber seed shell vulcanisates are within the accepted level for natural rubber mix.
