Abstract

The monograph by Drs. Chalmers and Bitterman on the challenges that patients face finding a provider sheds light on the lack of clarity for navigating this critical decision. Are there defined qualitative and quantitative measures that either singularly or in combination can help? As the authors suggest, there is no “one size fits all” regarding this decision. Complicating this is the reality that patients may value certain physician qualities differently: some may seek robust shared decision-making, while others desire a more prescriptive provider. My take is that patients have a right to expect their physicians have the clinical competency, intellectual honesty, and empathy to guide them on their journey. Which physician is best for you? That is between you and your doctor.
