Abstract
Patent medicines, including Dr. Wilson's Herbine Bitters, were sold by the thousands in Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many remedies, when analyzed, were found to contain mainly alcohol with little, if any, herbs. In 1909, laws to prevent such fraudulent products and advertising were enacted in Canada.
