Abstract

Answer C. Intra-muscular injection of benzylpenicillin 600 mg and transfer to hospital via emergency ambulance
Suspected meningitis cases should be referred as an emergency to secondary care by calling an emergency ambulance. While urgent transfer is arranged, it is good practice to handover to a senior paediatrician, even if the child is admitted via the accident and emergency department. Urgent administration of parenteral antibiotics is a priority in those with suspected meningococcal disease (meningitis with a non-blanching rash or septicaemia).
