Abstract

Answer B. Cellulitis
Cellulitis is an infection of the deeper portion of the dermis. It manifests as a localised area of painful, red, swollen skin as shown in the image. The rash is usually unilateral in distribution and may be associated with tracking lymphangitis. Patients can be generally unwell. Diagnosis is often clinical and management depends on how unwell patients are. An isolated rash without systemic upset can be treated in the community with a 1–2 week course of antibiotics. The presence of systemic upset, especially in the presence of tachycardia or a febrile patient, warrants admission and treatment with intravenous antibiotics.
