Abstract

InnovAiT is produced on a 3-year cycle. However, many articles do not significantly go out of date in that time. This section of InnovAiT summarises articles from the previous cycle of InnovAiT that GPs and GPs in training might still find useful today. In September 2020 InnovAiT the editorial suggested the recipe for a good GP.

GPs conduct around 13 million consultations each year relating to skin consultations. Dermatology has however remained a low priority in medical training, leaving GPs to learn about early diagnosis, management and appropriate referral of patients. This article highlights key clinical signs and offers a basic algorithm to help structure management of patients with skin conditions.

Antenatal screening
Dr Mah Jabeen
InnovAiT 2020 13(9): 528–533
DOI: 10.1177/1755738020931873
Antenatal screening should be offered to all pregnant patients in the UK. This article gives an overview for GPs and considers relevant haematological, chromosomal and structural anomalies to be aware of. The article also considers relevant maternal health and infections affecting pregnancy and the fetus. Women are choosing to have children later in life and this can increase the risk of some antenatal conditions.

ICU admissions: Consequences after discharge
Dr Minal Karavadra and Dr Ricky Bell
InnovAiT 2020 13(9): 550–556
DOI: 10.1177/1755738020932613
Intensive care units (ICUs) seem far removed from the GP’s consulting room and yet many patients are left with significant long-term sequelae after treatment in ICUs. This article highlights chronic symptoms acquired during ICU admission that will come to the attention of GPs with guidance to help better recovery.
