Someone presenting with back pain with sciatica pain should be assessed for cauda equina syndrome. Red flag symptoms include:
New reduced genital or 'saddle’ sensation Difficulty urinating New onset bilateral leg pain Severe or progressive neurological deficit in the legs Loss of bowel or bladder control Background of malignancy
