Abstract

InnovAiT is produced on a 3-year cycle. However, many articles do not significantly go out of date in that time. This section of InnovAiT summarises articles from the previous cycle of InnovAiT that GPs and GPs in training might still find useful today. In January 2021, InnovAiT included short articles on keeping active in old age and the now obsolete recorded consultation assessment examination.
Adverse childhood experiences
Dr Katie Scott
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 6–11
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), whether from emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or other causes, are associated with future excess morbidity and mortality. Awareness and early recognition can enable prevention and modification of adverse outcomes. This article outlines risk factors, recognition, interventions and a role for GPs to reduce the impact of ACEs.
The atraumatic limp in childhood
Dr Roderick Babakhanlou and Dr Tom Beattie
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 12–17
This article considers atraumatic limp in children, including the many causes and management. The approach to assessment needs to be holistic in primary care and the cause may be from a systemic pathology. Delay in diagnosis can increase morbidity and mortality.
What is palliative care?
Dr Francis Odukwe and Dr Francis Ezeh
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 19–25
In 1990 the World Health Organization recognised palliative care as a distinct specialty dedicated to relieving suffering and improving the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses or injuries. Around 377 per 100 000 adults and 63 per 100 000 children will require palliative care each year. This article will discuss what palliative care is, different approaches and the organisation of palliative care services. The article provides tips for GPs to improve provision of care.
The last 48 hours
Dr Monica Kumar
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 27–31
This article gives advice and guidance on how to meet the challenges faced by patients and relatives in the final hours of terminal care. Care should include maintaining patient dignity and managing symptoms.
Acute and chronic prostatitis
Dr Suleman Kanani, Dr Naheam Mujtaba and Dr Philip Sadler
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 33–37
Prostatitis is characterised as a painful inflammation of the prostate with or without infection. It is the most common urological diagnosis in men under 50 years and the third most common over age 50. This article outlines the forms of prostatitis, presentation and management. Acute prostatitis needs urgent antibiotic treatment to prevent progression to sepsis.
Sterilisation
Dr Rajesh Varma
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 38–44
Sterilisation is one of the many forms of contraception available to men and women. This article provides a decision-aid algorithm and counselling checklist to promote best practice for GPs.
Making sense of a systematic review
Dr David Tovey
InnovAiT 2020 14(1): 45–51
This article, the second of two on systematic reviews (SRs), describes the core components of a high-quality SR of health care interventions. Understanding the differing components is important in recognising the strengths and weaknesses of any SR, including the risk of bias.
