It is a profound honor to introduce this Special Collection of Natural Product Communications, dedicated to the extraordinary career and enduring legacy of Professor Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer of Near East University. This collection serves as a celebratory reflection of Prof. Başer’s monumental contributions to pharmacognosy, ethnobotany, and the chemistry of natural products. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the contributing authors, the diligent peer reviewers, and the editorial staff whose collective efforts have brought this tribute to fruition.
A Career Defined by Innovation and Leadership
He earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from Chelsea College, University of London, in 1978, and has since dedicated his life to advancing the fields of medicinal and aromatic plants. Prof. Başer’s academic journey began with a focus on alkaloids, but it was his pioneering work in essential oils that established him as a global authority. In 1986, he founded the Medicinal and Aromatic Plant and Drug Research Centre (TBAM) at Anadolu University. Under his leadership, TBAM became a beacon of excellence, hosting several UNIDO projects. Notably, between 1988 and 1997, the UNIDO-IPGTP “Training on the Utilization of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Pharmaceutical and Related Industries” (TRUMAP) program saw nearly 100 researchers from 40 developing nations receive specialized training under his guidance.
His influence extends far beyond the laboratory. As a consultant for international organizations such as UNIDO, FAO, and WHO, he has shaped the medicinal plant strategies of numerous countries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Scientific Excellence and Global Recognition
With a prolific output exceeding 1,300 scientific publications, including over 890 peer-reviewed articles, Prof. Başer’s impact is quantitatively and qualitatively staggering. His accolades—numbering 24 national and international awards—include the prestigious TÜBİTAK Science Award, the ISEO Medal (World Leader in Essential Oils Award), and honors from the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades (IFEAT).
As the editor of the seminal Handbook of Essential Oils: Science, Technology, and Applications, he has provided the scientific community with an indispensable reference that bridges the gap between traditional knowledge and modern industrial application.
A Lasting Legacy
Prof. Başer’s commitment to the scientific infrastructure is perhaps best exemplified by his founding of the Anadolu University Faculty of Pharmacy Herbarium (ESSE), a vital resource for taxonomists and natural product researchers. His botanical legacy is further immortalized in the flora of Turkey through four species named in his honor: Origanum husnucan-baseri, Aristolochia baseri, Centaurea baseri, Thymus baseri.
A Personal Reflection
As a former doctoral student of Prof. Başer, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand his tireless dedication to education and innovation. His mentorship has been the cornerstone of my own scientific vision and professional development. It is a distinct privilege to serve as the Guest Editor for this Special Collection, honoring a man whose work continues to inspire generations of researchers worldwide.
We hope this collection of articles, reflecting the diverse fields Prof. Başer has touched, provides readers with both valuable scientific insights and a sense of the immense scale of his contributions to the global natural products community.
