Abstract
The present mixed-methods study examined the effectiveness of a school-based mindfulness based intervention (MBI) on internet and smartphone use in adolescents. Using follow-up focus group interviews, the study explored the underlying mechanisms of how students perceived MBI influenced their usage. The study also tested on an integrative framework for mindfulness-based mechanisms to reduce problematic smartphone and internet use. Sixty two participants were 10th grade students in Türkiye. Outcomes were collected using psychometric scales, pre-post, from participants in an eight-session MBI (n = 31) and compared to controls (n = 31). Qualitative data were also collected from participants in the MBI group. The quantitative findings revealed that there was a reduction in internet addiction, problematic internet use, and smartphone addiction reported from participants pre-post in the MBI group, relative to controls. The qualitative findings revealed four primary themes: awareness, self-control, emotion regulation, and nomophobia. Overall, the results demonstrated that MBI was associated with reduction in smartphone and internet use. A revised theoretical framework to explain how MBIs lessen problematic internet and smartphone use was proposed.

Introduction
The internet is widely used in practically every aspect of people’s lives and has become a need in modern life (Siste et al., 2021). The rapid advancement of technology has made it more accessible to people everywhere (Marin et al., 2021). In 2024, approximately 5.5 billion people were using the internet, accounting for 68% of the global population (International Telecommunication Union, 2024). Misuse and overuse of the internet are predicted to rise as technology becomes more widely available at cheaper prices and with greater portability (Song & Park, 2019). Both internet addiction and smartphone addiction are growing more prevalent and serious issues as a result of the increased use of the internet, particularly on smartphones. These are both common in literature and are symptoms of technology addiction (Chin & Leung, 2018). It is argued that behaviors related to mobile phones and internet cannot be distinguished due to their combined use (Choliz, 2010). According to a prior study, 182 million people, or 6% of the global population, suffer from internet addiction (C. Cheng & Li, 2014).
Adolescents are the group that uses smartphones most frequently and is most vulnerable to the risks of overuse (Gangadharan et al., 2022; Widyanto & McMurran, 2004). Adolescence is a period when biological vulnerability to addiction increases, inhibitory control is limited, and addictive behaviors frequently begin (Chambers et al., 2003; Wagner & Anthony, 2002). Therefore, adolescents, especially those aged 14 to 18, are at high risk for excessive smartphone use and mental health problems (Kaltiala-Heino et al., 2004; Lemola et al., 2015). Furthermore, nomophobia, the fear or anxiety of being without access to one’s mobile phone, is becoming more common. As a result, excessive smartphone use can lead to a number of physical and psychological health issues including anxiety and insomnia (Daraj et al., 2023). Students’ nomophobic behaviors increase with higher levels of internet addiction (Gezgin et al., 2018). Research has demonstrated the links between internet and smartphone addiction and issues like poor sleep, disrupted peer relationships, loneliness, poor academic performance, increased symptoms of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and dissociation (e.g., Boysan et al., 2017; Chen et al., 2016; Cheng & Meng, 2021; Elhai et al., 2016; Erdem & Sezer Efe, 2022; Lepp et al., 2014; Kim et al., 2006; Seo et al., 2016; Ye et al., 2023).
Mindfulness-Based Interventions
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) are a capacity-enhancing technique that tries to strengthen the ability to control one’s emotions and exercise self-control (Busch & McCarthy, 2021). The Social Cognitive Model of Uncontrolled Internet Use (LaRose, 2011; LaRose et al., 2003) suggests that uncontrollable internet habits can be explained by inadequate self-regulation. The model suggests that initially, consciously chosen online activities gradually transform into automatic and habitual behaviors. This process is explained by the relationships between behavior, self-observation, self-reaction, and expected outcomes, while reducing uncontrolled use depends on effective self-regulation (LaRose, 2011). Numerous studies discovered that self-control and problematic internet and smartphone use were negatively correlated (Ding et al., 2022; Gülden & Polat, 2024; Song & Park, 2019).
According to the strength model, self-control, like a muscle, strengthens with regular practice, and self-regulation and self-control are interchangeable terms (Baumeister et al., 2007; MacKenzie & Baumeister, 2015). One essential component of the integrated regulation of behavior is mindfulness (Schultz & Ryan, 2015). Mindfulness consists of two fundamental elements: attention control and non-judgmental openness to experience (Bishop et al., 2004), and it guides the individual to the present moment (Schultz & Ryan, 2015). Non-judgmental awareness of thoughts and feelings strengthens self-control by reducing automatic and habitual responses (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008; Schwebel et al., 2020). Furthermore, problematic internet users often struggle to accept negative emotions (Pettorruso et al., 2020). Mindfulness facilitates acceptance of both positive and negative experiences, promoting experiential calm and recognition that internal states are transient rather than permanent (Appel & Kim-Appel, 2009; Heppner et al., 2015; Kabat-Zinn, 1994). The theoretical framework that demonstrates the suggested ways that MBIs lessen problematic internet/smartphone use is shown in Figure 1.

Through a number of interrelated mechanisms, MBIs are suggested to lower problematic internet and smartphone use. First, by improving self-observation, MBIs enable people to monitor their digital habits. By encouraging awareness to present-moment, this increased self-observation enables users to identify habitual patterns without automatically responding to them. Consequently, the disruption of automatic or habitual digital behaviors is said to strengthen self-regulation. These methods help people cut back on excessive or problematic internet and smartphone use.
Literature provides evidence for the efficacy of MBIs in both substance and behavioral addictions. Given that MBIs can help increase mindfulness (Gülden & Yalçın, 2024; Sommers-Spijkerman et al., 2021), MBIs have potential as useful treatments for internet and smartphone addiction (e.g., Cho et al., 2017; Fendel et al., 2024). Meta-analysis examining studies on the efficacy of MBIs on problematic usage of the internet (Fendel et al., 2024), the efficacy of MBIs primarily on substance use (W. Li et al., 2017) and the treatment of gambling disorder (Maynard et al., 2015), and two systematic reviews of MBIs for various behavioral addictions (Brandtner et al., 2022; Sancho et al., 2018) concluded that the efficacy of MBIs was promising. When the few individual studies examining the effects of MBIs are examined, it is evident that MBIs alleviated problematic social media use (Throuvala et al., 2020), internet addiction (Jung & Son, 2011), and smartphone addiction (Lan et al., 2018; L. Li et al., 2017; Liu et al., 2021). Although qualitative studies have examined the effects of MBIs on recovery from substance addiction (e.g., Chang et al., 2023), as far as is known, no qualitative studies specifically focusing on internet or smartphone addiction have been identified.
A meta-analysis by Fendel et al. (2024) demonstrates some effectiveness of MBIs for problematic usage of the internet. The majority of research on the effect of MBIs on problematic internet and smartphone use among high school students has been done in Iran and has shown positive results with single-sex samples (Berenjabadi et al., 2021; Ilanloo et al., 2022; Shadbad, 2017); however, there are few studies elsewhere, for example China (Liu et al., 2021) and the USA (Weaver & Swank, 2023). Considering the fact that the plasticity of the adolescent brain allows MBIs to be effective in adolescents (Roeser & Pinela, 2014), reaching different populations through community-based and appropriate implementation is important (Spears, 2019).
The Present Study
Our research is conducted in Türkiye. It is possible that Turkish adolescents may have distinct socio-emotional needs due to the country’s collectivist cultural structure (Bacanlı, 2012; Sunar & Fişek, 2004), family-centered social control (Yuksek & Solakoglu, 2016). Thus, researching MBIs associated with smartphone and internet use among Turkish teenagers could add to the body of knowledge. We aimed to evaluate the effects of an MBI on adolescents’ internet and smartphone use and to identify the changes in their internet and smartphone use associated with the program, as well as the ways in which MBI influences their usage, an embedded design with a convergent approach. As far as is known, this is the first mixed-methods study assessing the effectiveness of MBI on internet and smartphone use. Our research was guided by the following research questions: Does the MBI lead to significant changes in Turkish adolescents’ internet and smartphone addiction and problematic internet use? How do they experience and interpret changes in their internet and smartphone use following the program?
Method
Design
The present study used a quantitatively driven embedded mixed-methods design, in which qualitative focus-group data were collected concurrently to help explain the quantitative intervention outcomes. Findings are discussed together. The quantitative data were obtained using a pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design while the qualitative data were obtained with phenomenological approach. The qualitative method offers a complex view of the situation, while the quantitative method provides data that allows statistical analysis (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011).
Participants
After receiving approvals from the ethics committee of Middle East Technical University Applied Ethics Research Center (0146-ODTUIAEK-2024), the study was conducted with adolescents in 10th grade in a public high school in Ankara, Türkiye. The school principal identified a class to be involved in the intervention (n = 31) and a class as the control group (n = 31) out of the entire 10th grade. The participants ranged in age from 15 to 16 years (Mage = 15.58 years; (SDage = 0.49 years; 69.6% female).
Procedures
Data were collected during the 2024 school year. Two distinct times were chosen to gather the data questionnaires: 1 week prior to the beginning of the MBI (pre-test) and 1 week following its conclusion (post-test). Written informed consent was given by each participant and their legal guardians, prior to participation. The data are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request. The study flow is illustrated in Figure 2.

Intervention
An MBI consisting of eight face-to-face sessions was implemented with a group of 31 students once a week for 40 min for eight consecutive weeks. No intervention was applied to the control group in the study. The MBI was developed and delivered by the researcher who has a PhD focusing on MBI in psychological counselling with experience and training in teaching mindfulness to adolescents. Through meditation-based activities, the program aimed to teach adolescents how to become observers of their thoughts, feelings, and body as well as how to become more aware of these aspects of themselves. It was important to incorporate the short activities to maintain the participation and attention of the adolescents during the sessions. MBIs that had been used in the literature before were taken into account when designing the program (e.g., Broderick, 2013; Edwards et al., 2014; Semple et al., 2010; Teasdale et al., 2014). The intervention details are summarized in Table 1.
Description of Mindfulness-Based Intervention.
Focus Group Interviews
Two focus groups were conducted one week after completion of the MBI to explore adolescents’ perceptions of how the program influenced their internet and smartphone use. Participants were randomly selected from the intervention group and assigned to two small groups to support balanced participation and effective group dynamics. In total, 18 students took part (group 1: three males, six females; group 2: two males, seven females). Each focus group lasted approximately 40 min, was held in a quiet classroom provided by the school, and was audiorecorded. The focus groups were facilitated by the researcher, who had prior experience conducting interviews with adolescents, to foster rapport and encourage open discussion. To minimize potential bias associated with the dual role (i.e., researcher/interviewer) open-ended, non-directive questions were used, participants were encouraged to share both positive and negative experiences, and transcripts were blindly coded by an independent second researcher. Participation was voluntary, no incentives were offered, and students could withdraw at any time. Discussions were guided by the core question, ‘How do you think the program influenced your internet or smartphone use?’, with follow-up probes used to clarify and extend responses.
Measures
Young’s Internet Addiction Test-Short Form (YIAT-SF)
YIAT-SF (Pawlikowski et al., 2013) is a 12-item self report measure of internet addiction. Participants respond to statements using a Likert scale, ranked from 1 (never) to 5 (always). The scale score has a range of 12 to 60, with higher scores denoting a higher degree of internet addiction. The psychometric qualities of the YIAT-SF have been acceptable in samples of teenage Turkish participants (Kutlu et al., 2016) (α = .86) and the scale demonstrated good internal consistency in the present sample (α = .86)
Smartphone Addiction Inventory Short Form (SPAI-SF)
SPAI-SF (Lin et al., 2017) is a 10-item self report measure of smartphone addiction. Participants respond to statements using a Likert scale, ranked from 1 (strongly disagree) to 4 (strongly agree). The scale score has a range of 10 to 40. The psychometric properties of SPAI-SF have been acceptable in samples of teenage Turkish participants (Devran Muharremoğlu & Erbaydar, 2021) (α = .85). The scale demonstrated good internal consistency in the present study’s sample (α = .86).
Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire-Short Form-6 (PIUQ-SF 6)
The PIUQ-SF-6 (Demetrovics et al., 2016) is a 6-item short form measure of problematic internet use. The scale score has a range of 6 to 30, with higher scores indicating a higher level of problematic internet use. Participants respond to statements using a Likert scale, ranked from 1 (never) to 5 (always/almost always). PIUQ-SF 6 was found to be a valid and reliable measuring tool after its validity and reliability in the Turkish version were assessed (Göktaş et al., 2018) (α = .82). The scale demonstrated good internal consistency in the present study’s sample (α = .86).
Data Analyses
Quantitative Data
Mixed within between analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed using SPSS v27. Separate 2 (Group: MBI vs. Control) × 2 (Time: Pre-test vs. Post-test) mixed ANOVAs were performed with internet addiction, smartphone addiction, and problematic internet use as dependent variables. Before performing mixed design ANOVA, analyses of normality were performed to determine whether the data were normally distributed. Values of skewness and kurtosis were computed for normality. Kurtosis ranges from −1.206 to .821, while skewness ranges from 0.106 to 0.930. According to Tabachnick and Fidell (2012), these values are within the range of ±1.5. In addition, the homogeneity (Levene) test showed that there were equal variances at smartphone addiction but unequal variances at internet addiction and problematic internet use. Field (2009) and Kao and Green (2008) state that ANOVA is quite robust in terms of error rate when the assumption of homogeneity of variances is not met. However, it is stated that this is valid only when the sample sizes are equal; such is the case here. Additionally, to ensure the equality of the groups in the study, independent samples t-tests were conducted to demonstrate that the MBI and control groups did not differ on outcome measures (YIAT-SF, SPAI-SF, and PIUQ-SF) at pre-test.
Qualitative Data
An inductive thematic approach was used to manually analyze the focus group data after verbatim transcriptions were made. The present study employed the six phases of thematic analysis as devised by Braun and Clarke (2006). Within the stage of familiarizing oneself with the data, the responses of the participants were actively read and re-read in order to understand the participants’ opinions regarding the research topic and was taken notes for coding. An inductive approach was initially applied in the coding process, and this was followed by deeper and more structured interaction with the data. The data were coded by writing notes on the texts and the potential patterns were highlighted. Within the third stage, codes were examined and considered for how they might be integrated into broader themes. At this stage, an initial thematic map was used to visualize the data and help the researcher assign themes to the various codes. In the fourth stage, each theme’s collected excerpts were examined, and it was evaluated whether they seemed to fit together as a cohesive whole. Some of the themes were expanded upon, clarified, or omitted. It was considered whether the candidate thematic map fits the data set as a whole. At this phase, a second blind-coder engaged in the coding process and cross-checked the data. A second independent blind coder examined the interview transcripts without having access to the original coding scheme in order to strengthen the qualitative analysis’s credibility. Cohen’s kappa was used to evaluate inter-rater reliability. The result was a value of 0.82, indicating strong agreement. Within the next stage, stronger thematic labels were provided related to the themes, and themes were named. Within the final stage, the report of this study was formed. At this stage, all themes and sub-themes providing convincing quotations from adolescents’ responses were reviewed. The study’s final report underwent multiple revisions.
In order to identify process-level patterns across participant accounts, the analysis not only identified themes but also explicitly looked at relationships between themes. It was investigated how participants described sequences, directional relationships, and recurrent patterns by going beyond isolated themes through this integrative analytic step. The conceptual model that was first put forth was updated and improved based on these patterns. Instead of being a formal theory, the final model is an integrative framework informed by data that depicts the processes that participants have described.
Results
Quantitative Findings
As shown in Table 2, no significant difference was observed between the intervention and control groups regarding YIAT-SF, SPAI-SF, and PIUQ-SF pre-test scores.

Mixed with-between 2 (Group: MBI vs. Control) × 2 (Time: Pre-test vs. Post-test) ANOVAs were performed with internet addiction, smartphone addiction, and problematic internet use as dependent variables. For internet addiction, the analysis yielded a main effect for time F(1, 60) = 16.20, p < .001, such that the internet addiction scores changed significantly lower at post-test (M = 21.9, SD = 5.42) than pre-test (M = 28.4, SD = 7.03). The main effect of group was non-significant, F(1, 60) = 2.804, p = .099. However, the interaction was significant, F(1, 60) = 18.99, p < .001, indicating that the reduction in internet addiction was greater in MBI group than in the control group.
For smartphone addiction, the analysis yielded a main effect for time, F(1, 60) = 17.50, p < .001, such that the smartphone addiction scores changed significantly lower at post-test (M = 16.8, SD = 4.27) than pre-test (M = 22.1, SD = 5.39). The main effect of group was non-significant, F(1, 60) = 1.497, p = .598. However, the interaction was significant, F(1, 60) = 34.45, p < .001, indicating that the reduction in smartphone addiction was greater in MBI group than in the control group.
For problematic internet use, the analysis yielded a main effect for time, F(1, 60) = 17.88, p < .001, such that the problematic internet use scores changed significantly lower at post-test (M = 10.7, SD = 3.00) than pre-test (M = 14.6, SD = 3.55). The main effect of group was non-significant, F(1, 60) = 0.280, p = .226. However, the interaction was significant, F(1, 60) = 23.97, p < .001, indicating that the reduction in problematic internet use was greater in MBI group than in the control group.
Qualitative Findings
From the thematic analysis, four main themes and nine subthemes were identified. Table 3 provides an overview of each theme and related subthemes. Each subtheme was supported by dialogue from focus groups with the adolescents.
Themes for Perceived Changes in the Participants’ Internet and Smartphone Use.
Theme 1: Awareness
In both of the focus groups, all of the adolescents stated that they became more aware. The two subthemes that follow provide an overview of their thoughts on this primary theme: awareness of the use of smartphone or internet, and awareness of the surroundings. This theme illustrates how, after the intervention, participants became more mindful and attentive to how they used smartphones and the internet. Teenagers reported being more aware of how much time they spent on the internet, identifying automatic usage patterns, and focusing on their actions in the here and now rather than using it habitually.
Awareness of the Use of Smartphone or Internet
The adolescents repeatedly reported that they were more aware of the time they spend on the internet or with a smartphone. Adolescents stated that previously, time passed quickly without them noticing how much time they spent online or on their phones, but now they are aware of how much time they spend online. They made it clear that they recognize the importance of time. Adolescents reported that they began to doubt the value of the time they spent on the phone or the internet when they realized how much time they were spending on it. Even though they claimed that the time spent online was a waste of time and had no value other than to pass the time, it was noted that some students were questioning their academic obligations rather than spending time on the phone or online. Furthermore, some teenagers reported that they found shorter periods of time were enough for them when they spent time on the phone or internet mindfully, and they added that the videos they had previously watched without awareness were now boring to them. Four of the students who participated in the program expressed their experiences with the following sentences:
I used to not be aware of the time I spent on my phone. I’ve come to realize. Social media is incredibly unnecessary. ‘Why do I need to watch videos?’ I ask myself. ‘What did it add to my life, I ask? What good did I get out of watching this? What will I do in my daily life?’ I ask myself. Rather, I say, let me go and do some research because I have a job, for instance. Put differently, I attempt to utilize my phone in a way that best serves my needs. In general, I began to wonder why I was using the internet [Female aged 16 years]. I realized that the things we watch on the phone or on the internet do not benefit us. It made me realize that spending unnecessary time on social media does not get me anything. It does not provide any benefit. These activities helped me understand this. For example, instead of watching videos, I could watch a lesson video. Watching what other people are doing will not add anything to my life. It is unnecessary for me, so I have reduced my social media use. Before, I was more active, following people, checking what they were posting, following products, but now I realize that none of that benefits me. I’ve started using the internet more consciously [Female aged 15 years]. When I look at it mindfully, one hour is enough. For example, before, when I was browsing social media on my phone, I didn’t realize how time passed, but now it’s not like that anymore. Now I really feel like I’m in that moment. Just one hour of looking at it is enough. And now I also read the news. Social media is getting boring for me. For example, I like football, so I go and watch matches and the daily news [Male aged 16 years]. Remember that activity where we wrote down our daily activities in a schedule? Especially that activity made me realize just how much I use my phone. I even thought, if I can notice all this, maybe I should start writing a journal, reading it, and maybe I’ll realize the mistakes I make. I started thinking that maybe I wouldn’t repeat those mistakes [Male aged 16 years].
Awareness of the Surroundings
Following the program, every adolescent in the focus groups reported that their awareness of their surroundings improved. After participating in the program, the teenagers claimed to have realized that there were other enjoyable activities other than using a phone or the internet. They stated that spending time on the phone or on the internet used to be much more fun, but now different activities seem more enjoyable. The teenagers said that they spend time with their friends and family rather than using their smartphones. They reported that, despite not realizing it before, they now understood how joyful and pleasurable it was to spend time with their family and friends. They stated that their social relationships had become better and that both they and the people around them were happier.
Some students stated that their family members no longer warn them about the duration of their smartphone use and that the program’s effects were also noticed by them. Furthermore, the majority of students reported realizing the beauty of reading books, studying, and doing homework when they do these tasks mindfully. They said that whereas they used to do their homework fast and carelessly, they now do it with greater care, attention, and curiosity. Additionally, they claimed that as a result of studying more, they were more successful in their classes, which in turn increased their motivation to study and led to a decrease in smartphone use. Some students stated that they started doing sports instead of using their smartphones, and realized how good sports were for their bodies. They stated that when they carry out their activities mindfully, they do not have time to use their phones and do not feel the need to use them. Two of the students who participated in the program expressed their experiences with the following sentences:
For example, I used to come home from school. I would wash my hands and face, look at my phone, and play games. Now I do not do it. Even if I do, I spend less time on the phone. I realized that there are many things to do around me with this program. For example, I can walk around and play games other than using the phone. For example, yesterday, instead of looking at my phone, I went to the market and bought things I needed at home. These are actually better than looking at my phone. I realized this. Looking at my phone was more enjoyable before [Male aged 16 years]. We’ve understood the importance of time. Time used to seem unimportant to me. I used to look at my phone too much. When I was bored, I would always look at my phone. But now, for example, I’m becoming aware of the things around me. Previously, I only entertained myself with my phone. I didn’t want to do anything else. I realized I wasn’t spending more time with my family and that I was generally focused on my phone. I wasn’t focusing much on my studies either. Even when I did study, I didn’t study much. But now, instead of my phone, I prefer studying, spending time with my family, and spending time with my friends. I’m becoming aware of things. I understand that I’m focusing more on my studies. I’ve started to understand my lessons better. I’ve become more aware of my responsibilities [Female aged 16 years]. When I’m walking down the street, like going to the market, and I see trees, I start thinking more about them. How did this tree get here? I used to not pay any attention to trees before. I’d just pass by them. Now, I realize how this tree got here, how it grew, how its leaves matured. I notice the stones on the path, the sounds they make. I don’t walk aimlessly anymore. Similarly, when browsing the internet, videos you watch randomly don’t stick in your mind. So I use it more consciously. I watch videos that will benefit me more. I’m much more aware of the things around me now [Female aged 16 years]. Now when I go out, instead of just hanging around aimlessly, I can do different activities. I’ve learned that I can do more. Or rather, I’ve learned that I can dedicate more time to reading by focusing on it. Instead of just reading and passing through, I can read slowly and understand it. I’ve realized that when I’m studying or watching something important, time passes more quickly when I focus on those things. Actually, because of this, I don’t have time for my phone anymore. I try to understand the things I do more, I pay attention and focus, and I think I’ve improved. These activities have improved my attention span. Because of this, I’ve started to spend my free time more on other things instead of my phone. If I continue this, I will actually distance myself even more from my phone, and my screen time will decrease even more. I think my sister should do the same. She’s on her phone too much and isn’t aware of anything [Female aged 15 years].
One student’s words perfectly capture the impact of the program on them. ‘I am more aware of brushing my teeth, drinking water, blinking, even breathing. I do everything with more care. We have become more aware of everything. Everything has increased in value in our eyes’ [Female aged 16 years].
Theme 2: Self-Control
Teens reported that after the program, they could better control how much time they spent on their smartphones and the internet. Adolescent reflections on this second theme are summarized in the following two subthemes: the control of internet or smartphone usage duration and the control of the purpose of using internet or smartphone. This theme reflects the participants’ improved ability to exercise self-control and deliberate control over how they use smartphones and the Internet. Adolescents talked about limiting their usage time, fighting the urge to use excessively, and focusing their attention on other offline pursuits.
The Control of Internet or Smartphone Usage Duration
Some of the teenagers said that prior to the program, they were unable to limit how much time they spent on their phones and the internet, even if they wanted to. As a result, they failed to complete their assignments and studies, and even when they tried to put their phones away, they would often spend hours on them. There were two students reporting that although they gained more self-awareness through the program, there were no change in their smartphone usage. The following statements were made by the teenagers:
I used to not be aware of the time I spent on my phone. I used to play on it so much, it would literally be six or eight hours, but now, for example, it definitely doesn’t exceed three hours. I actually wanted to quit before, but I couldn’t, but now I have. Since I stopped using my phone, my social circle has expanded, and I’m actually with someone every day, meeting or studying with a different person every day [Male aged 16 years]. I used to look at my phone a little too much before going to sleep. I would stay up too late to sleep then. I would say let me look at it for another five minutes. Then I would realize that it was two-three o’clock at night. Then I would fall asleep. It was also very difficult to get up in the morning. I would not come to school because of that. Sometimes I would come to school very late and come to the second lesson, but it is not like that anymore. I can leave it when I want to [Male aged 16 years]. I used to occasionally put off doing my work so I could browse the internet. I stopped putting off doing my work to browse the internet. For example, I have homework. I want to spend an additional five minutes browsing the internet. I used to say five more minutes. It has drastically decreased now. For instance, when I had homework to complete, the time would fly by while I was browsing the internet. For instance, I would suggest waiting five more minutes. Let’s see, nine, nine thirty, and ten. I would say that I would stay up a little later. Back then, I wouldn’t finish that homework, but that isn’t the case now [Male aged 16 years]. My phone usage hasn’t changed much. It hasn’t affected me that much. I was aware of how much time I used it before, and I’m aware of it now, but I prefer it this way. It has made me more aware of myself. It has helped me become aware of my own body. For example, I realized that our feet carry us when we take a step. I understood how they strive for us. It was the same in breathing exercises. I actually got to know myself a little more concretely. Not in terms of my outward appearance, but I became aware of my inner self. Even my walk was different. It wasn’t like usual, I thought about things in more detail, more seriously [Female aged 15 years]. There hasn’t been much change in phone usage. I still watch lecture videos, but I also look at other things. I know that watching those other videos makes me spend more time on them. Time passes faster. I’m aware of that, but I prefer it that way [Female aged 15 years].
The Control of the Purpose of the Using Internet or Smartphone
Some of the students stated that while they did not know why they used the phone or the internet before, they can now use the internet or phone according to their own wishes and purposes.
While I used to use my phone as a hobby, for example, to entertain myself, now I only use it when necessary. It wasn’t like that before. I use it as a communication tool. I come home, I go out, are we going here or there? Only when necessary now. For example, I only use it to watch TV series. Even then, it’s only for about half an hour; I can’t even finish a series. And I don’t watch series every day anyway. I go home and do research for schoolwork if needed. I’ve started using my phone much less. It used to be much more. Instagram used to take up so much of my time. I’d go home, check it, and see it was 5 p.m., but I’d think, ‘What am I going to do?’ I’d say, ‘Let some time pass, I’ll do this work,’ and then I’d realize I didn’t have time left. So, it’s all over now, not like that at all, but because I look at my phone less, I spend more time with my surroundings [Female aged 16 years]. I think I’ve learned to control myself through these activities. Previously, for example, even though I said I wouldn’t look at my phone, I would keep looking at it. Now, when I say I won’t look, I stop. I say, ‘Okay, I’m not looking,’ and I don’t. Also, before, I used to always look at my phone while eating, but now that’s not the case anymore. For example, I eat and chat with my brother, and it’s always like that. I even used to look at my phone while eating snacks, but that’s gone now [Female aged 15 years].
Theme 3: Emotion Regulation
The majority of students stated that when they are bored, they no longer use their phones or go online. The second theme highlights how teenagers no longer use mobile phones or the internet to help them deal with their negative emotions as much as they did before. Their reflections on this theme are summarized in the following two subthemes: accepting negative emotions and focusing on other activities as a way to control emotions. The ability of participants to identify and control negative emotions without instantly using their smartphones or the Internet is captured by this theme. Participants reported being able to pause, recognizing emotional triggers and cravings to use technology, and selecting different coping mechanisms in place of regular digital engagement.
Accepting Negative Emotions
The adolescents who participated in the program stated that they used to use their phones or the internet to escape or ignore their negative feelings when they experienced them, but now instead of escaping their negative feelings through their phones, they have learned to confront their feelings and accept them. According to the teenagers, both positive and negative emotions are natural, and they recognize that trying to run away from these emotions will not help them deal with them. Using the following phrases, three of the teenagers described how acknowledging emotions affects phone use:
Before, I used to avoid things, for example, when something upsetting happened, I never wanted to confront it. I didn’t want to do anything about it. Because of this, I spent more time on social media. I was constantly scrolling through videos, watching videos. I realized I needed to accept that feeling. I realized that if I didn’t accept it, it would always come back to haunt me. It would always be somewhere in my brain, so at least I could be sad there and move on [Female aged 16 years]. When I was sad, I would either look at my phone or sleep, but after the program, I am thinking these are normal things to be sad about, everyone can do this. I am thinking what can I do to be good. I accept myself and say these are normal feelings [Female aged 16 years].
Trying Different Ways to Cope with Negative Emotions
Some of the teenagers reported that they now engage in other activities rather than grabbing for their phones right away when they feel bad. A few students added that they now talk to friends or family when they are feeling down:
When I was sad or angry, I would look at my phone mostly to distract myself to forget that feeling. For example, when I was angry, I would immediately go to the phone to forget my anger and forget it. I would immediately pick up my phone to relieve my sadness. But right now, I do not pick up my phone right away. Instead, I do something else. For example, I draw a picture, scribble something, or study [Female aged 16 years]. For example, before, when I argued with someone, like my mother, I would go to my room and look at my phone, but now it’s not like that. I go to my room, but I don’t look at my phone. I think. If I think I’m wrong, I go and apologize [Female aged 15 years].
Theme 4: Nomophobia
Nomophobia is the final theme that emerged from the focus groups. Nomophobia describes individuals’ fear of being away from smartphones or mobile devices, a reflection of excessive dependence on technology. Before the program, adolescents expressed feelings of anxiety when they were unable to use their phones, emphasized the importance of having an internet connection, and feared their phones might break. Some of the adolescents stated that they did not care if they had a smartphone or not. Their reflections on this fourth theme are summarized in the following three subthemes: Being afraid of a smartphone going out of service, not worrying about being disconnected, and being nervous when unable to use smartphone.
Being Afraid of the Smartphone Going Out of Service
Teens reported that they had been afraid their phones would break before the program, but that fear had vanished after. One of the youths used the following phrases to describe how the program affected him:
What would I do, I used to wonder, if my phone broke? I used to believe that there was nothing to do with my leisure time. Things have changed since then. Even now and then, when I go out, I forget my phone at home. I am not even aware that I left my phone behind. For instance, after going out, I realize it after an hour has passed. I turn around, and the phone is gone. That was never the case previously. I used to be really afraid of what I would do in the event that it broke [Male aged 16 years].
Not Worrying About Being Disconnected
Some adolescents reported that they do not give any importance if they have an internet connection or carry their phones with them. One student provides the following description of the program’s impact:
I used to bring my phone to the market, for instance. Now, for instance, I go home with my phone—so what? When I was not carrying my phone, I used to feel so empty. I do not feel like that anymore. There is no such thing as a void. As an illustration, suppose I am somewhere without internet. The lack of internet access does not bother me. My lack of internet access is insignificant. For me, not having a phone at the moment is acceptable [Female aged 15 years].
Being Nervous When Unable to Use the Smartphone
Some of the teenagers stated that before the program, they wanted to use their phones and got upset when they could not, but that is now behind them. The following phrases were used by one of the students to describe this circumstance:
Even when my parents told me not to use my phone, I would get angry. I would angrily put the phone down, but it was always on my mind when I needed it. Time without my phone was hard to get through [Male aged 15 years]. I used to get more anxious when I had work to do because I wanted to spend more time on my phone but couldn’t before this program. While I have work to do, I feel compelled to use my phone more than I would like to. I would do the work reluctantly and become anxious and tense when I was unable to do that because I was unable to check my phone. It dawned on me. It has changed since then [Female aged 16 years].
To capture process-level patterns across participant accounts, the thematic analysis not only identified themes but also explicitly looked at relationships between themes. The creation of an integrative conceptual model that summarizes the qualitative findings was aided by this analytical stage. The model was intended to be a data-driven framework that represented recurrent experiential pathways reported by participants rather than a formal theory. The original framework was modified to include observed mechanisms like increased participation in alternative rewarding offline activities and improved self-reaction after participant experiences were qualitatively analyzed. An updated integrative framework for a mindfulness-based strategy to reduce problematic internet and smartphone use in Figure 3.

The revised model explains how MBI enhances adolescents’ self-observation and awareness of internet and smartphone use, reduce emotion-driven and habitual engagement. In addition, it shows that MBI strengthens self-reaction through time and goal regulation, lower the perceived reward value of online activities, and promotes engagement in alternative offline activities, and ultimately reducing problematic internet and smartphone use.
Discussion
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the MBI on adolescents’ internet and smartphone use and to determine how the program affects these behaviors using an embedded mixed design. The findings revealed that Internet addiction, smartphone addiction and problematic internet use had significant interactions revealing that the MBI group improved more than the control group. Additionally, there was significant main effects of time for internet addiction, smartphone addiction, and problematic internet use, indicating that scores changed from pre-test to post-test across groups. Specifically, the mixed methods approach, which included thematic analyses followed by quantitative analyses, allowed for the exploration of patterns in how MBI impacts adolescents’ internet and smartphone usage. Thematic analysis findings revealed four main themes: awareness, self-control, emotion regulation, and nomophobia. The findings showed that following improvements in awareness and self-regulation, adolescents became more mindful of their smartphone and internet use and their surroundings and also began to value other activities. Furthermore, it revealed that they used alternative methods to cope with negative emotions and that their smartphone/internet anxiety decreased after the program. The findings are consistent with the previous studies supporting the negative relationship between mindfulness and internet addiction (Jung & Son, 2011), smartphone addiction (Lan et al., 2018; L. Li et al., 2017; Liu et al., 2021; Yang et al., 2023), and problematic social media use (Throuvala et al., 2020).
Consistent with the conceptual model in Figure 3, improvements in awareness and self-regulation, the majority of the participants stated that they became more aware of their use of smartphone or internet and their surroundings. They reported that they were able to manage the amount of time and purposes they spent using their phones and the internet. The study findings highlight the fact that teenagers can regulate the amount of time and goals they spend using their phones and the internet as they become more aware of their usage. The findings are consistent with the Social Cognitive Model of Uncontrolled Internet Use which highlights a lack of self-regulation in the development of uncontrolled internet habits (LaRose, 2011; LaRose et al., 2003). Adolescents with greater awareness were found to be less likely to use smartphones and the internet to deal with negative emotions and to better control the amount of time and purpose of their use. Furthermore, the perception of alternative activities as more rewarding supports the model’s emphasis on the reward mechanism in maintaining habits. An additional noteworthy finding from the research is that teenagers are starting to appreciate other activities as their awareness increases. Boredom is a common reason cited by those with internet use disorders for their online activities (Lindenberg et al., 2020). Adolescents with high mindfulness levels are better able to focus on their daily lives (Volkmer & Lermer, 2019).
Consistent with the conceptual model in Figure 3, the effect of MBI on adolescents’ emotion regulation is also remarkable. Gratz and Roemer (2004) suggested that there are several concepts involved in emotion regulation, such as accepting and comprehending emotions as well as being aware of them. Adolescents stated that they accept unpleasant feelings and recognize the fleeting nature of emotions. Problematic internet users find it difficult to accept their negative feelings (Pettorruso et al., 2020). By accepting both good and bad experiences, one can attain experiential calm, which is made possible by mindfulness (Kabat-Zinn, 1994).
Additionally, teenagers stated that they experiment with alternative methods to deal with unfavorable feelings rather than hitting the internet or their smartphones. Addicted individuals use the internet as a tool for escaping reality and rapidly suppressing negative emotions, rather than confronting underlying issues (Khang et al., 2013; LaRose, 2011). Mindfulness helps individuals break the rumination cycle by allowing them to observe their emotions and thoughts without judgment (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008) and supports them in more consciously evaluating their behaviors in relation to their goals (Brewer et al., 2015). Furthermore, mindfulness practices have been shown to increase positive affect, decrease negative affect, and strengthen emotion regulation skills (Bajaj et al., 2016; Hölzel et al., 2011). Previous research supports the relationship between emotion regulation and mindfulness (Felver et al. 2016; Gülden & Polat, 2024; Zhang & Zhang, 2021).
The last theme that is reflected is nomophobia, strong emotions brought on by being unable to access one’s technology, such as fear, anxiety, or discomfort (King et al., 2014). Before the program, adolescents reported feeling anxious when they could not use their phones, that they valued having an internet connection, and that they were afraid of their phones breaking down. However, these findings were reversed after the program. These results align with earlier research. Regan et al. (2020) found that as mindfulness increased, the impact of nomophobia and boredom on problematic smartphone use decreased among college students. Similarly, Arpaci et al. (2019) showed that students with low mindfulness scores were more nomophobic; mindfulness practices can reduce students’ desire and anxiety regarding smartphone use (Wisner, 2017). Mindfulness encourages a close connection to the present moment (Brown & Ryan, 2003) and MBIs can indirectly support behavioral control by promoting an accepting attitude that leads to more conscious awareness of internet and smartphone use, and therefore may be beneficial for individuals experiencing nomophobia (Regan et al., 2020).
Overall, quantitative analyses revealed declines in smartphone and internet addiction and problematic internet use scores. Qualitative findings corroborate these findings: participants reported better emotion regulation, enhanced self-control, and heightened awareness of their internet and smartphone use. They reported observing automatic usage patterns, setting personal boundaries, and delaying reactions to cravings. The mechanisms behind the noted quantitative improvements are explained in part by these narratives. Together, the quantitative and qualitative data show how MBIs may lessen problematic digital behaviors by improving self-observation, interfering with habitual use, and promoting emotion and impulse control. These findings provide a cohesive understanding of the intervention’s effects.
Limitations and Future Research Directions
The fact that our results are only applicable to adolescents—those between the ages of 15 and 16—represents a limitation. The results of this study indicated that adolescence is the appropriate time to practice mindfulness. Nevertheless, more research is needed to support this conclusion, including comparison studies using age- and program-appropriate standardized programs and measures. The sampling was conducted in a convenient way in a single school by choosing predefined classes, which could have introduced bias in how the sample was selected. The gender imbalance in the study may limit the generalizability of the findings. Furthermore, the persistence of the effects is unknown due to the lack of follow-up data. One of the limitations of this study is that the comparisons were made using a passive control group instead of an active one. Another limitation is that no random assignment was made between the groups. The lack of random assignment limits internal validity.
Additionally, researcher bias and social desirability effects may have been exposed due to the researcher’s dual role as both researcher and instructor. The use of mixed methods in the study may have helped reduce such biases. Furthermore, to minimize these biases and increase the reliability of the results, an independent coder was used to code the qualitative data. Before collecting the quantitative data, the difference between the scores of the MBI and control group was examined.
A key limitation of this study is the absence of quantitative manipulation checks for mindfulness, emotion regulation, and self-control. As a result, the suggested mechanisms cannot be supported by direct quantitative evidence. However, thorough qualitative analysis provides significant evidence in favor of these mechanisms. The integration of qualitative and quantitative data enhances the interpretive understanding of how the intervention may have an impact, even though this method is unable to establish causal relationships at the quantitative level. In addition, there was no requirement for participants to be addicted to internet or smartphone. The program was applied to a community sample. The effectiveness of the program especially on adolescents who are addicted to the internet or smartphone can also be examined. Evaluating screen time would be a more beneficial component to include in future research. Furthermore, the instruments used to measure internet and smartphone addiction, although their validity and reliability have been confirmed in Turkish society, may not be fully suitable for population with different cultural characteristics.
Based on these findings, school counselors/psychologists could use mindfulness exercises both in classroom or individual sessions to help students use the internet and smartphones less. School counselors/psychologists could offer brief mindfulness training sessions to encourage parents to engage in mindfulness exercises with their children at home. Additionally, it may be beneficial to include MBI in school curricula so that adolescents can manage their screen time and digital device use more consciously. Since the program’s effectiveness was assessed during class hours at school in this study, it would be relatively simple to incorporate it into the existing school curriculum. This integration could make the program more accessible and sustainable for students, ensuring it reaches a wider audience without requiring significant changes to current school structures.
Conclusion
The findings revealed that the adolescents in MBI group had significantly lower levels of internet addiction, problematic internet use, and smartphone addiction, pre-post relative to controls. The underlying mechanisms of teenage behavioral change were investigated. Teenagers stated that they stopped using smartphones to deal with negative emotions and learned to concentrate on other activities. They also reported that they became more aware of their screen time and found other fun activities outside of smartphones and the internet. Additionally, the teenagers reported feeling less anxious about being without a smartphone or internet and having more control over how long and why they used them.
