Abstract

Alshowkan A, Shdaifat E. Personality Traits, Fear of Missing Out, and Social Media Addiction Among Nursing Students: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach. SAGE Open Nursing. 2025;11:10.1177/23779608251345959
Sage was made aware of an unreferenced overlap between the article and a previous publication by the authors1. Following which authors have responded to these concerns, and provided following explanation:
Both articles were developed concurrently as part of a larger research project using the same dataset. Each paper had different research objectives and analytical approaches; the JMIR Nursing article1 employed a cross-sectional descriptive design focusing on predictors of social media addiction, while the SAGE Open Nursing article applied structural equation modeling to test theoretical pathways. Because the two manuscripts were submitted around the same time, the authors were unable to cite the related paper at the time of submission. The omission was unintentional.
The SAGE Open Nursing (2025) article makes a distinct contribution by advancing from descriptive prediction to theory-driven modeling. While the JMIR Nursing study identified significant predictors using regression-based analysis, the SON article examined direct and indirect (mediated) effects within an integrated structural equation model, thereby providing deeper theoretical insight into the mechanisms linking personality traits, fear of missing out, and social media addiction.
The following statement has been added to the Methods section (Setting and Design):
This study is part of a broader research project using the same dataset previously reported by Alshowkan and Shdaifat (2025). The earlier JMIR Nursing article employed a cross-sectional descriptive design to identify predictors of social media addiction. In contrast, the present study applies structural equation modeling to test theoretically grounded pathways and mediation effects. Accordingly, the research objectives, analytical approach, and contribution of this article are distinct.
The authors apologize to readers for this inadvertent error.
The Journal Editor agreed with the explanation and corrective actions taken by the authors.
