Methodology for Evaluating the Transmission Profile of Fragrance Volatiles Through a Semi-Permeable Delivery System

Abstract

Results are presented on the effect of air velocity and fragrance composition on the permeability of selected fragrance volatiles through ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA) and ethylene/ethyl acrylate (EEA) copolymer membranes. For the fragrance delivery system studied, the rate limiting step for the permeability of fragrance volatiles was assumed to be bulk diffusion. Tb insure bulk diffusion was the rate limiting step, all studies were carried out at a constant cell flow rate of 20 cc/min.

The change in transmission rate values as a function of time for the fragrance volatiles linalool, phenethyl alcohol, benzyl acetate and a-hexyl cinnamaldehyde are described for the EVA and EEA membrane systems, respectively. Studies were carried out on two fragrance formulations at 50'C.
